Minor Ravenclaws

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following are minor characters from the Harry Potter series in Ravenclaw House. The Ravenclaw characters Cho Chang and Luna Lovegood have their own articles, as does Filius Flitwick, the head of Ravenclaw house. The Grey Lady is listed in the Hogwarts ghosts article.

Contents

[edit] Stewart Ackerley

Harry Potter character
Stewart Ackerley
Gender Male
House Ravenclaw
First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Stewart Ackerley is a student three years younger than Harry. He was the first to be called during the Sorting in the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Stewart was trembling from head to foot as he approached the Sorting Hat but was quickly welcomed to the Ravenclaw table with applause. When Harry saw Cho Chang cheer Stewart on, he had a strange desire to join the table too. Stewart has not been mentioned since and nothing else is known about his character.

[edit] Terry Boot

Harry Potter character
Terry Boot
Gender Male
House Ravenclaw
Parentage Muggle-born (?)
Allegiance Dumbledore's Army
First appearance Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Terry Boot is in Harry Potter's year, and is friends with Michael Corner and Anthony Goldstein. Terry was introduced in the first book as the first student to be sorted into Ravenclaw. He was present at the Duelling Club with Lockhart in his second year and ended up with a bloody nose.

In his fifth year, Terry became a member of Dumbledore's Army. At the initial meeting he revealed that he was in Dumbledore's office the previous year, and that a portrait had told him that Harry had slain a Basilisk with the sword in the office. He was also rather impressed by Hermione's ability to do the N.E.W.T.-level Protean Charm, and questioned why she had been sorted into Gryffindor and not Ravenclaw. Aboard the Hogwarts Express at the end of the school year, Terry was one of the students who assisted Harry when Draco Malfoy and his friends attempted to ambush him.

In book six Terry appears in Professor Slughorn's first lesson, being one of four Ravenclaws in Harry's year to take N.E.W.T.-level Potions.

Terry may be the "T. Boot" listed in Quidditch Through the Ages as a student who has borrowed the book from the Hogwarts Library. The list of students in Harry's year shown in J. K. Rowling's interview special "Harry Potter and Me" includes a Ravenclaw named "Trevor Boot"; this may have been a name previously considered for the character before she ultimately christened Neville Longbottom's toad with that moniker.

Terry's parentage is tentatively known from the interview special "Harry Potter and Me".

[edit] Mandy Brocklehurst

Harry Potter character
Mandy Brocklehurst
Gender Female
House Ravenclaw
Parentage Half-blood (?)
First appearance Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Mandy Brocklehurst is in Harry's year. She was sorted into Ravenclaw in the first novel, but has not been mentioned since then. Nothing else is known about her. Her parentage is tentatively known from the interview special "Harry Potter and Me".

[edit] Eddie Carmichael

Harry Potter character
Eddie Carmichael
Gender Male
House Ravenclaw
First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (mention)

Eddie Carmichael (born 1978 or 1979) appears in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when he tries to hawk a bottle of Baruffio's Brain Elixir to Harry and Ron for twelve Galleons before their O.W.L.s. (Eddie swore the elixir was solely responsible for the nine Outstanding O.W.L.s he had achieved the year prior.) However, the transaction was terminated by Hermione Granger, who, acting as prefect, confiscated the elixir and disposed of it in a toilet.

Carmichael is a Ravenclaw one year ahead of Harry. He seems to be highly intelligent, a distinguishing characteristic of all Ravenclaws, but unscrupulous.

[edit] Penelope Clearwater

Harry Potter character
Penelope Clearwater
Gender Female
Hair colour Black
House Ravenclaw
Parentage Muggle-born
Actor Gemma Padley
First appearance Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Penelope "Penny" Clearwater makes her first appearance in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry and Ron run into her while sneaking around Hogwarts disguised as Gregory Goyle and Vincent Crabbe, although she is not named until later in the book after she and Hermione Granger are petrified by the monster roaming the school. It is later implied that Penelope was wandering the halls the night Harry met her in order to meet with her secret boyfriend, Percy Weasley, a Gryffindor prefect.

Penelope is a tall Ravenclaw prefect with long black curls. She apparently began dating Percy Weasley at the end of The Philosopher's Stone, because in the following summer the other Weasley boys notice that Percy stayed shut up in his room all summer writing letters to someone. His correspondent was later revealed to be his girlfriend Penelope. However, all this was revealed to Harry, Hermione and three of the Weasley brothers only at the end of The Chamber of Secrets, when a mischievous Ginny Weasley told them how she walked in on Percy and Penelope kissing in an empty classroom. Percy was extremely upset when he found out that Penelope had been Petrified.

There has been some confusion about Penelope's age and year at Hogwarts. In the first edition of Chamber of Secrets, Penelope was described as a fifth-year student, who was thus one year behind Percy and three years ahead of Harry at Hogwarts. In the 2004 British edition of Chamber of Secrets, the text was amended to make Penelope, like Percy, a sixth-year.

She was briefly seen in the second movie when Nearly Headless Nick greets her and Percy in a hallway, addressing her as "Miss Clearwater". Penelope was played by Gemma Padley for this scene. However, Penelope has not appeared in the books since The Prisoner of Azkaban.

[edit] Michael Corner

Harry Potter character
Michael Corner
Gender Male
Hair colour Dark
House Ravenclaw
Parentage Half-blood (?)
Allegiance Dumbledore's Army
First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Michael Corner is best known as Ginny Weasley's first boyfriend, and is friends with Terry Boot and Anthony Goldstein. His parentage is tentatively known from the interview special "Harry Potter and Me". Ginny met Michael at the Yule Ball and began dating him at the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. (Note that he didn't actually appear in Goblet of Fire and this information was explained only in the fifth book.) Michael has dark hair and is in Ravenclaw. It is perhaps because of his relationship with Ginny that he joined Dumbledore's Army. He initially suspected Hermione Granger of only wanting to form the group so she would pass her Defence Against the Dark Arts O.W.L. later that year.

Ron Weasley has questioned Michael's intelligence; however, he clearly spoke out of disapproval of Michael dating his sister, Ginny. When Michael was duelling Ginny during a D.A. meeting, he didn't hit her, though it is not clear whether he did this because he didn't know the spell or simply because he didn't want to curse his girlfriend. Ginny later referred to Michael as a fool, though not in his presence, when he almost drew unnecessary attention to the D.A. during Dolores Umbridge's reign of terror. However, he was intelligent enough to achieve a high score on his Potions O.W.L., is in the clever house of Ravenclaw, and was one of the few students in Harry's year to matriculate in Horace Slughorn's Advanced Potions class.

When Dolores Umbridge knocked Harry off the Gryffindor Quidditch team, he was replaced by Ginny. After Gryffindor beat Ravenclaw in the final Quidditch match of the year, Michael wasn't pleased, so Ginny dumped him. Michael instead began dating the Seeker from his own team, Cho Chang. Ginny then shifted her romantic interest to Dean Thomas, much to her brother Ron's frustration.

For a minor character, Michael is notable for having dated (in reverse order) the exact same two girls as Harry - Ginny Weasley and Cho Chang.

[edit] Roger Davies

Harry Potter character

Henry Lloyd-Hughes as Roger Davies with Fleur Delacour at the Yule Ball in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Roger Davies
Gender Male
House Ravenclaw
Actor Henry Lloyd-Hughes
First appearance Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

Roger Davies is the Captain of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team and is one of the Chasers. He is a talented player and seems to be considered very good looking - Fleur Delacour evidently liked him enough to allow him to escort her to the Yule Ball.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Cho Chang claimed to Harry that Roger asked her to go out with him but she turned him down in favour of Harry instead. Later in the fifth book, Roger and his date for the afternoon, a pretty blonde girl, ended up in Madam Puddifoot's in Hogsmeade - the same tea shop as Harry and Cho (and many other student couples). Cho tried to use Roger's interest in her to make Harry jealous, but only succeeded in confusing him.

[edit] Marietta Edgecombe

Harry Potter character
Marietta Edgecombe
Gender Female
Hair colour Strawberry Blonde
House Ravenclaw
Parentage Half-blood or Pure-blood
Allegiance Ministry of Magic (presumed)
First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Marietta Edgecombe has curly, reddish-blonde hair and is a friend of Cho Chang. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it was stated that Cho was always followed by a group of giggling girls, but Marietta is the only one who has been given a name or described in any detail.

Marietta's mother is Madam Edgecombe, who helped Cornelius Fudge and Dolores Umbridge take control of Hogwarts. Madam Edgecombe works in the Floo Network Office, which is part of the Department of Magical Transportation in the Ministry of Magic, and she policed the Hogwarts fires, except for Umbridge's, to make sure that nobody in the school made contact with anyone the Ministry did not want them to have contact with.

As Cho had a romantic interest in Harry Potter, who was at the centre of the Ministry's smear campaign, this left Marietta in a difficult position. Marietta joined Dumbledore's Army entirely because of peer pressure. Dumbledore's Army was doing the one thing the Ministry didn't want to happen; training students in combat.

Eventually, Marietta betrayed the D.A. to Umbridge; however, the parchment that all members had signed had been jinxed by Hermione, so she broke out with pustules which spelled the word, "SNEAK". Umbridge took Marietta to testify against Harry, but Kingsley Shacklebolt swiftly modified her memory, to keep Harry and his friends out of trouble.

This incident caused a rift in Harry and Cho's relationship. Harry blamed Marietta, though Cho maintained Marietta's innocence, insisting that it was hard for Marietta having a mother in the Ministry. Harry retaliated by saying his friend Ron was in the same position and he kept his word.

In the most recent book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the word "Sneak" is still present on her face, though she attempts to cover it with large amounts of makeup.

[edit] S. Fawcett

Harry Potter character
S. Fawcett
Gender Female
House Ravenclaw
Parentage Half-blood or Pure-blood
First appearance Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

Miss S. Fawcett is probably a member of the Fawcett family which lives in the vicinity of Stoatshead Hill (also within walking distance of the Weasley, Lovegood and Diggory family) although this remains unproven. In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, she was injured during the meeting of the Duelling Club with Lockhart. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire she attempted, but failed, to illicitly enter the Triwizard Tournament. She subsequently attended the Yule Ball and lost twenty House Points when she was discovered by Severus Snape, outside in the rose garden, engaged in a tryst with a Hufflepuff boy called Stebbins. In the UK edition, Fawcett is a Hufflepuff and Stebbins is a Ravenclaw during this incident (even though Fawcett was noted by Dumbledore as a Ravenclaw when he noted her attempt to cross the Age Line).

Her first name is unknown but an S. Fawcett is listed as a borrower of Quidditch Through the Ages. Her parentage is unknown but in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it was indicated the Fawcetts were a wizarding family, thus making S Fawcett either a pureblood or a half-blood. Finally, her year is also unknown, but if she was in a lower year than Harry, she could not have attended the Yule Ball unless she was asked by somebody older. If she was more than two years ahead of him, she could have entered the Triwizard Tournament legally.

[edit] Anthony Goldstein

Harry Potter character
Anthony Goldstein
Gender Male
House Ravenclaw
Parentage Half-blood (?)
Allegiance Dumbledore's Army
First appearance Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Anthony Goldstein, a student in Harry's year, is friends with Michael Corner and Terry Boot. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Anthony, along with Padma Patil, became a prefect for Ravenclaw. He also joined Dumbledore's Army and was one of the D.A. members to assist Harry on the train against Draco Malfoy, Vincent Crabbe, and Gregory Goyle when they attempt to ambush Harry. His parentage is tentatively known from the J. K. Rowling interview special "Harry Potter and Me".

His surname is a typically (German) Jewish surname, meaning 'Beautiful Stone'. Because of this, there is a high chance of his being either Jewish or possessing Jewish ancestry.

[edit] Padma Patil

Harry Potter character
Padma Patil
Gender Female
Hair colour Dark
Eye colour Dark
House Ravenclaw
Actor Sharon Sandhu, Afshan Azad
First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Padma Patil is the identical twin sister of Parvati Patil, one of Harry's classmates in Gryffindor. Padma, however, was sorted into Ravenclaw. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, she attended the Yule Ball with Ron Weasley at the urging of Parvati—Harry's date—when he begged her to find a date for Ron. Padma wasn't excited to have Ron as a partner since Ron wouldn't want to dance with her. Their classmate Dean Thomas marvels that Harry and Ron managed to go to the dance with "the two best-looking girls in the year", a sentiment shared by Dean's friend Seamus Finnigan.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Padma became a Prefect for Ravenclaw. She also joined Dumbledore's Army along with Parvati.

The Patils' names and appearance in the movies imply that the characters are of Indian descent. Patil is a common Maratha surname in the state of Maharashtra, India. In Sanskrit, Padma means "lotus", which symbolises divinity and purity, because of its nature and birth in dirty mud water.

Rowling initially intended her and her sister to bear forenames beginning with Ma. Their surname on the classlist is possibly spelt as Patel.

In the films Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Padma instead is in Gryffindor house, like her sister, as they are seen constantly around the other. The Patils are not portrayed as identical twins in the movies.

[edit] Orla Quirke

Harry Potter character
Orla Quirke
Gender Female
House Ravenclaw
First appearance Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

Orla Quirke is a student three years younger than Harry. She was Sorted into Ravenclaw in the fourth novel, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, between Graham Pritchard and Kevin Whitby. Nothing else is known about her and she hasn't been mentioned since.

[edit] Lisa Turpin

Harry Potter character
Lisa Turpin
Gender Female
House Ravenclaw
First appearance Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

Lisa Turpin is in Harry's year. She was sorted into Ravenclaw in the first novel, with her sorting (in the American version of the novel) coming between those of Harry's future roommates Dean Thomas and Ron Weasley. She has not been mentioned since then, and nothing more is known about her.

[edit] Others

The following characters are known only as members of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team and by the position they play:

  • Bradley (Chaser)
  • Chambers (Chaser)

During a 2001 TV special called Harry Potter and Me, J.K. Rowling showed the camera an early notebook page listing some of the students in Harry's year. Each student's name was given, along with his/her gender, house, and parentage. These notes are not considered canon, as many of the characters have undergone significant changes from the notes to the books. For instance, Michael Corner and Anthony Goldstein are listed as Hufflepuffs in the notebook, but when they are introduced in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, both of them are Ravenclaws; indeed, Anthony Goldstein is one of the Ravenclaw prefects.

There are several students from Harry's year who are mentioned in the notebook, but have not yet been introduced in the actual books. They are listed below for the sake of completeness, but some of their names and houses may change if/when they appear in the series proper.

As these students, coupled with the students already mentioned in this article, make a total of 10 Ravenclaw students in Harry's year, it's generally considered to be the only complete collection of students.

  • Stephen Cornfoot is a male, Pure-blood Ravenclaw.
  • Kevin Entwhistle is a male, Muggle-born Ravenclaw.
  • Isabel MacDougal is a female, Pure-blood Ravenclaw. (Likely an earlier version of Morag MacDougal, whose house is unknown).
  • Su Li is a female, Half-blood Ravenclaw.
