[edit] Alecto and Amycus
Harry Potter character | |
Alecto and Amycus | |
---|---|
Gender | Female and Male, respectively |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince |
Alecto and Amycus are siblings (sister and brother, respectively) who participated in the assault on Hogwarts school. Amycus is described as being squat and lumpy-looking, with a lopsided leer and a wheezy giggle. They are possibly "the Carrows" mentioned by Snape in the second chapter.
Amycus is a hero in Greek mythology. Alecto is one of the Furies, the Greek goddesses of revenge.
[edit] Avery
Harry Potter character | |
Avery | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
House | Slytherin |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
Actor | Richard Rosson (cut) |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire |
There are two Death Eaters named Avery — one may be the other's father. Sirius Black mentions that an Avery was one of Snape's friends in Hogwarts, and there was also one in Tom Riddle's class. The same applies for the Lestranges and Rosier.
One Avery has known Voldemort since Hogwarts. Another, the one we know the most about, was also a Death Eater during Voldemort's first reign of terror, but avoided being brought to justice by saying he was acting under the Imperius Curse. After he rose again, Voldemort punished Avery with the Cruciatus Curse due to the man flinging himself at Voldemort's feet and begging forgiveness.
His luckless streak continued -- he was tortured at least once more by Voldemort, the second time occurring in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix when Augustus Rookwood debunked the information Avery had given Voldemort concerning Broderick Bode being able to take the prophecy from the Department of Mysteries.
He participated in the Department of Mysteries battle and was paired up with Walden Macnair. Whether he was the baby-headed Death Eater or not is in contention — he also could have been in the Brain Room or Planet Room. As a result, it is not known if he made his way to the Death Chamber or not.
Whatever the case, he was apprehended at the Department of Mysteries and afterward sent to Azkaban.
[edit] The Carrows
Harry Potter character | |
The Carrows | |
---|---|
Parentage | Pure-blood |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (mention) |
The Carrows are two Harry Potter characters who are Death Eaters. Their first names are unknown, however they could possibly be the siblings Alecto and Amycus. They are two of the Death Eaters mentioned by Severus Snape in the second chapter of Half-Blood Prince. They were said to have been amongst those who believed that Lord Voldemort was gone forever.
[edit] Crabbe Sr.
Crabbe Sr., little is known about him except that he's a Death Eater and Vincent Crabbe's father. Mentioned by Lord Voldemort during his "rebirth". In the raid on the Ministry of Magic, he was defeated and imprisoned. He was possibly the baby-headed Death Eater.
[edit] Antonin Dolohov
Harry Potter character | |
Antonin Dolohov | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (mentioned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) |
Antonin Dolohov was one of the five Death Eaters who murdered Gideon and Fabian Prewett, who were Molly Weasley's brothers. He also tortured many Muggles and opponents of Voldemort during the first war. Dolohov was caught shortly after Igor Karkaroff, who named him during his own trial. He was sent to Azkaban, but escaped during the mass breakout of January 1996. He fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban prison. Because of his name, which is of Russian/Tatar origin, he could possibly be a graduate of Durmstrang.
During the battle, he proved that he was one of the most dangerous Death Eaters. He single-handedly defeated Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Neville Longbottom at one time. He later got caught in the battle and was sent to Azkaban.
Dolohov is a character from the War and Peace novel by Leo Tolstoy. Dolohov from the War and Peace is brave but rude, cruel and violent towards most people, but at the same time very loving and caring towards his mother and sisters. Antonin is typically a Central and Eastern European name.
[edit] Gibbon
Harry Potter character | |
Gibbon | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Hair colour | Blond |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince |
Gibbon was a Death Eater who participated in the assault on Hogwarts school and set off the "Dark Mark". He was hit by a Killing Curse fired accidentally by the "enormous blond" Death Eater.
[edit] Goyle Sr.
Goyle Sr., little is known about him except that he is Gregory Goyle's father and a member of the Death Eaters and is currently at large. He was mentioned at Lord Voldemort's "rebirth". He and Crabbe Sr are mentioned as being the largest in size of the Death Eaters at the rebirth ceremony; as such, he could be the 'enormous blonde' Death Eater in book six.
[edit] Fenrir Greyback
Harry Potter character | |
Fenrir Greyback | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Hair colour | Grey |
Parentage | Werewolf |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince |
Fenrir Greyback is the most feared werewolf alive. He considers it his purpose in life to contaminate others with lycanthropy. Children are preferred, as he can then abduct them and raise them to hate normal humans, but he ultimately wishes to convert as many people as possible. Fenrir is also a cannibal, as he enjoys the taste of human flesh and blood when he isn't in his transformed werewolf state. He is on Lord Voldemort's side in the Second War.
Greyback will often attack the children of people who refuse to cooperate (with him personally, or with the Death Eaters in general), and it was for this reason that he contaminated Remus Lupin. During the Second War, a young boy with the surname of Montgomery (whose elder sisters are at Hogwarts) was attacked by a werewolf, presumably Greyback, and was killed, after his mother had refused to help the Death Eaters. Werewolf victims usually survive (as werewolves), but are sometimes killed if the werewolf gets carried away.
Draco Malfoy claims to have connections with Greyback; he is "an old friend of the family". He may have used Greyback to threaten Mr Borgin in order to secure a passage past Hogwarts' defences: however, when the Death Eaters do come for the Battle of Hogwarts, Malfoy is horrified to find that Greyback is among them. It seemed that Greyback was a monster so terrifying that Malfoy feared what he could do; he had not intended for the "attack" to go that far.
At the Battle of Hogwarts, Greyback struck viciously – he brutally attacked Bill Weasley, leaving Bill barely recognisable. Lupin noted that because Greyback did this while in human form, it was an extraordinary case and "they might [only] notice wolfish characteristics in him," such as his desire for rather rare meat. Towards the end of the battle Greyback attempted to kill Harry Potter, but was stopped when hit with a Full Body Bind curse. (Who exactly cast the curse was not made clear.) It is thus assumed that he was one of the Death Eaters who was captured during the Battle of Hogwarts. If this is true, the werewolves who are loyal to Lord Voldemort are now leaderless, perhaps allowing Lupin to convince them to abandon their vicious ways, as Dumbledore wanted him to do in book six of the series.
Fenrir Greyback is named for the monstrous wolf Fenrisulfr, whose release in Norse mythology heralds Ragnarök. The mythical Fenrir is the son of Loki (god of mischief and foster-brother of Odin) and the giantess Angrboda. He eventually kills Odin, who is then quickly avenged by his son Vidar. Greyback is perhaps a reference to the grey fur of the average wolf.
[edit] Grindelwald
Harry Potter character | |
Grindelwald | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Allegiance | Unknown (Dumbledore's enemy) |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (mention) |
Grindelwald was a Dark wizard before Lord Voldemort and his only mention is in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone on Albus Dumbledore's Chocolate Frog card which notes that Dumbledore defeated Grindelwald in 1945.
It has been speculated that, since 1945 saw the end of World War II, there may be a connection between Grindelwald and Adolf Hitler and so it is possible that Grindelwald was head of the magical wing of the Third Reich. This is further supported by the fact that "Grindelwald" is a German-sounding name, "Wald" meaning "forest" in German. (Grindelwald is also a place in Switzerland where Richard Wagner — whom Hitler admired — lived.) Grendel was a monster in the epic poem Beowulf. Even one of Dumbledore's middle names is Wulfric, talking part of Beowulf's name. J. K. Rowling has since indeed indicated that there was a global wizarding war taking place at the same time as World War II and that the two fuelled each other.[1]
It is speculated that Grindelwald could have met the young Dark wizard Voldemort (who would have been in his teens) prior to the former's defeat by Dumbledore. It is possible that Grindelwald used horcruxes; however, it is unlikely that he had more than a single Horcrux as Voldemort declared that he had gone further on the way to immortality than anyone else.
[edit] Herpo the Foul
Harry Potter character | |
Herpo the Foul | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Hair colour | Unknown, but may be white judging from the chocolate frog cards |
Allegiance | The Dark Arts |
Herpo the Foul was an ancient Greek Dark wizard who bred the first known Basilisk. He appears on Famous Wizard card number 4 and in the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them under "Basilisk". Herpo was also one of a short list of known Parselmouths (others include: Salazar Slytherin, Marvolo Gaunt, Morfin Gaunt, Lord Voldemort, and Harry Potter.) Herpo's name derives from the Greek herpeton which means "reptile" and/or herpo which means "to creep".
[edit] Jugson
Harry Potter character | |
Jugson | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix |
Jugson fought in the Battle of the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban Prison.
[edit] Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange
Harry Potter character | |
Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
House | Slytherin |
Parentage | Pure-blood |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire |
Rodolphus and Rabastan Lestrange are a pair of Death Eaters. They are brothers, and Rodolphus is married to Bellatrix Lestrange. Alongside Bellatrix and Barty Crouch Jr., the two brothers aided in the torture of Frank and Alice Longbottom, driving both of them into insanity.
All three Lestranges were formerly imprisoned in Azkaban until their escape, along with several other Death Eaters.
Rodolphus Lestrange was mentioned by Sirius Black as having been among Severus Snape's "friends" at Hogwarts. A Lestrange was also part of Tom Marvolo Riddle's class. This Lestrange is most likely the father of Rodolphus and Rabastan.
Rabastan and Rodolphus are described in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as "a thickset man who stared blankly up at Crouch" and "a thinner, more nervous-looking man whose eyes were darting around the crowd", though no indication is given as to which was which.
Near the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, a message signed R.A.B. is found. Some have interpreted these initials as "Rodolphus And Bellatrix"; however the writer refers to him/herself in the singular and it is highly unlikely that either Lestrange would try to destroy a horcrux. While not all theories on R.A.B.'s identity involve the Lestrange family, another guess is that these initials mean "R.A.B"astan (Rabastan) Lestrange. It is considered most likely that R.A.B. is actually Regulus A. Black, a member of the Lestrange/Black family. See Bellatrix Lestrange for more details.
Historically, the Lestranges were a minor noble family from Ellesmere, in Shropshire. They held the title of Baron Strange.
[edit] Walden Macnair
Harry Potter character | |
Walden Macnair | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Hair colour | Black |
House | Slytherin |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
Actor | Peter Best |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban |
Walden Macnair is a Death Eater who also has a job within the Ministry of Magic as an executioner for the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures, and was assigned with the task of executing Buckbeak in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. He also served as one of Lord Voldemort's envoys to the giants, and it seems he helped to persuade them to join forces with the Death Eaters. He also fought in the battle in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and was wounded by Neville Longbottom when Neville poked Hermione Granger's wand through the eyehole in his Death Eater mask.
[edit] Mulciber
Harry Potter character | |
Mulciber | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (mentioned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) |
Mulciber fought in the battle in the Department of Mysteries and is currently in Azkaban. He was originally captured before Igor Karkaroff came to trial, but escaped in the mass breakout of January 1996. He is noted as a specialist in the Imperius Curse. Mulciber is the latin word for "melter", and was used as a name for the Roman god Vulcan (first by Virgil). Furthermore Mulciber is the name of one of the fallen angels in John Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost.
[edit] Nott
Harry Potter character | |
Nott | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
House | Slytherin |
Parentage | Pure-blood |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire |
Nott is the father of Theodore Nott, a Slytherin student at Hogwarts, in Harry's year. Rowling mentioned on her website that he is an elderly widower. Nott was a Death Eater and after Lord Voldemort's fall, he wormed his way out of Azkaban, but joined him when he rose again in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Nott was involved in the battle in the Department of Mysteries in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and was injured. After he was stunned by Hermione Granger, Lucius Malfoy ordered the rest of the Death Eaters to leave him there.
[edit] Augustus Rookwood
Harry Potter character | |
Augustus Rookwood | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (mentioned in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) |
Augustus Rookwood was a spy in the Department of Mysteries during Voldemort's first rise to power. He was friendly with Ludovic Bagman's father, and offered "Ludo" a job in the Ministry of Magic. Rookwood acted as though he was aiding the anti-Voldemort cause, but proved to be a double agent. He gained information from many, including Ludo, and had other unwitting agents throughout the Ministry and Wizarding World.
Igor Karkaroff named Rookwood during his own trial, and Rookwood was sent to Azkaban but escaped in the mass breakout of January 1996.
After his escape, Rookwood returned to Voldemort, and informed him that Avery's information about Bode being able to steal the prophecy was incorrect. Since Rookwood was an employee of the Department of Mysteries, it can be assumed he helped in the planning for the raid on the Department of Mysteries. He also took part in the fight there. He was at the Death Chamber battle, where he was seen duelling with Kingsley Shacklebolt, casting the Avada Kedavra death curse.
He is currently back in Azkaban prison. In his mugshot in the Daily Prophet, Rookwood is described as having a pockmarked face and greasy hair, and looking bored.
In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, page 480 (Bloomsbury edition), a Death Eater is mentioned, named Algernon Rookwood, who appears nowhere else in the series. It is uncertain whether this is an error, or a relative of Augustus. His description fits that of Augustus, suggesting this is just a typo.
Interestingly, a man involved in the Gunpowder Plot bears a similar name, Ambrose Rokewood, and "Augustus Rookwood" might be a modification of the name of this real historic figure.
[edit] Evan Rosier
Harry Potter character | |
Evan Rosier | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
House | Slytherin |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (mention) |
Evan Rosier (d. 1980) was killed by Aurors, shortly after Igor Karkaroff's capture. While resisting arrest he took a big chunk out of Mad-Eye Moody's nose. Sirius Black recalls him as one of Snape's friends.
Evan is Greek and means "of noble birth", appropriate for a typical Death Eater with pure-blood prejudices. Rosier is the name of a fallen angel (formerly holding the rank of Dominion in the angelic hierarchy). This demon may appear as either a man or a woman, and is a kind of patron devil of tainted love and seduction. The demon Rosier, is especially noted for assuming a human form of great physical beauty, and tempting humans to fall in love, so that they will therefore sin or act foolishly.
As the maiden name of the mother of Bellatrix Lestrange, Andromeda Tonks, and Narcissa Malfoy was Druella Rosier, it is possible that Evan Rosier is a relative, most likely their cousin.
[edit] Travers
Harry Potter character | |
Travers | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (mention) |
Travers was a Death Eater, who, according to Karkaroff, killed the McKinnons. He may be the "brutal-faced" or the "enormous blond" Death Eater seen during the Battle of Hogwarts. In Igor Karkaroff's trial scene, Barty Crouch notes that "Travers and Mulciber, we have"; as Mulciber is later seen participating in the Second War, it is likely that Travers, having been spoken of in the same vein, also survived and escaped. He may have been one of the escapees in the mass breakout of January 1996.
[edit] Wilkes
Harry Potter character | |
Wilkes | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
House | Slytherin |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (mention) |
Wilkes (d. 1980) was a Death Eater killed by Aurors.
[edit] Yaxley
Harry Potter character | |
Yaxley | |
---|---|
Gender | Male |
Allegiance | Death Eaters |
First appearance | Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (mention) |
Yaxley was, according to Snape, one of the Death Eaters who thought Voldemort to be dead. He may be the "brutal-faced" or the "enormous blond" Death Eater in Book 6. He is probably related to Lysandra Yaxley, mother of Callidora, Cedrella, and Charis Black, which would also make him a distant relative of the Longbottoms, Malfoys, Weasleys, Blacks, and Crouches.
