Minnesota Rouser

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The "Minnesota Rouser" is the fight song of the University of Minnesota. It's played at all Minnesota Golden Gophers games. It was the subject of a 1909 contest held by the Minnesota Daily and the Minneapolis Tribune to write a suitable song for Minnesota football games, to replace the hymnlike "Hail! Minnesota". Ironically, another song written for the contest and titled "Minnesota, Minnesota" was re-written as "On Wisconsin, On Wisconsin". This is also the School song of Corsica High School in Corsica, South Dakota.

[edit] Lyrics

Minnesota, hats off to thee,
To thy colors true, true we shall ever be...
So, firm and strong, united are we.
Rah, rah, rah, for Ski-U-Mah,
Rah, rah, rah, rah
Rah for the U of M.
M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A!
Minnesota, Minnesota! Yaaaaaay Gophers!

(The phrase 'Ski-U-Mah' was part of an early cheer for the U of M)

[edit] Ski-U-Mah

Ski-U-Mah was the college humor magazine of the University of Minnestota from the nineteen-thirties until shortly after World War II. Its most prominent writer was Max Shulman, who later wrote the stories that became the television program The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis.
