- This article is about the alternative high school in Quebec. For other uses, see Mind (disambiguation).
MIND High School was founded in 1975 and was originally located on the third floor of the International YMCA, located at the corner of Park Avenue and St. Viateur. At that time, MIND was known simply as "Alternative High School". A vote was held by the students and staff and "MIND" (Moving In New Directions) was declared the winner. Shortly after, MIND moved to the third floor of the old High School of Montreal building on University Street, which was otherwise occupied by the arts-oriented high school FACE. During this period, MIND staff consisted of 8 teachers, including one Head Teacher, and approximately 133 students in grades 9 through 11 (secondary 3 to 5). MIND now has 5 teachers and has approximately 85 students.
In 1999, MIND moved to the top floor of the Bancroft elementary school building, On Mont. Royal and St. Urbain, in the shadow of Mount Royal, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. M.I.N.D. is an acronym meaning Moving In New Directions. MIND was founded as a partnership between the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal (PSBGM) and McGill University.
MIND is an alternative education senior high school that is a partnership between the English Montreal School Board (ESMB) and McGill University's Faculty of Education. The program focuses on providing critical thinking and enriched education through alternative teaching methods, and is reputed amongst alternative education schools for its extremely friendly, welcoming and acceptant student body and its community-based programs.
MIND's reputation stems primarily from the fact that it is composed heavily of students who feel that they are "unusual" (punk, goth, etc) and couldn't fit in with their regular school's environment. The students of MIND are known for their acceptance of anyone, regardless of their thinking habits or personal beliefs. MIND is also unique in having the only male school secretary in Montreal. He is a young, athletic, fashion conscious, free-spirited individual who knows how to make things fun. His name is Anthony Doerper. Anthony has two lovely cats, Moya and Kooki, which are featured in the photo gallery on the MIND High School website which Anthony designed.
MIND is part of the English Montreal School Board.
