Milton High School

Milton High School is a high school in northeast Fulton County, Georgia. In 1921, the school was built in the suburban city of Alpharetta. At the time of its creation, the city was a farm town with little city influence, but it size grew rapidly over the coming years. Now the school has moved from its original location in downtown Alpharetta to a new foundation near the local middle school, Northwestern Middle School. The school's new campus is located in the newly incorporated City of Milton.

[edit] History

At the time of its creation, Milton High School taught students in grades 1 to 11. It had no central heating system or plumbing until the merger of Fulton County and Milton County in 1932. Then, the much more wealthy Fulton County began to improve the school's facilities. In the 1950s, the addition of an elementary school in the area (Alpharetta Elementary School) and an additional high school Roswell High School allowed Milton to shrink its size to teach grades 8 to 12. Until the opening of Roswell High, Milton was the only public high school in the region which now covers the attendance zones of five high schools. In the 1970s, economic and social transitions of the area allowed Milton High School to build a new cafeteria, library, and front office. In 1983, with the opening of Haynes Bridge Middle School, eighth grade was dropped, leaving the school as a grade 9 - 12 facility. As the 1990s came, Milton began to add new facilities to the school by adding the Milton High School Center for the Arts, a greenhouse, music and the health/physical education facilities.

[edit] Today

The new Milton High School teaches grades 9-12. Milton also now employs a controversial academy system that allows students to choose a 'track' of sorts that personalizes their schooling experience. For their freshman year (9th grade), all students must take the Freshman Academy. From 10th grade on, students can choose between the Math and Science Academy, Social Sciences Academy, and the Humanities Academy. Each Academy teaches the courses required for graduation, but teaches them in a way similar to the 'theme' of the academy. Some people in the school have said that if a student is involved in "honors" classes, the academy system does not affect them very much.

The current Principal is Ron Tesch. Sam Smith IV, a senior, is the Student Body President, while Max Ade, a junior, is the Student Body Vice President. Both of these students play an active role in voicing the opinion of the students at Milton High School.

[edit] Sport Achievements

Milton High School has excelled in most sports over the years and is the solid foundation of the school. The MHS Baseball Team has made it to playoffs for the past several years under the direction of Coach Greg Robinson where they also won the state championship in 2003. The basketball team made it to the second round of playoffs. Since its creation, the lacrosse team has known much success. For the past two years, the girls lacrosse team has won the state championship. The boys team lost in 2006 in the semifinals of the state tournament. Milton's Hockey team also won the state championship in 2006. The girls tennis team made it to the state tournament in 2006 and were ranked in the top ten. Although the football team has not seen as much success as the other sports at MHS, there is always a sell out crowd and enthusiasm is built from week to week before every game. The girls soccer team made it to the semi-finals in 2006, and the boys soccer team has made the 2004 playoffs. Andrew Parkin has made the student section fun and intresting. With his muscles and grace he given the basketball lots of support.

Sports at Milton include: Lacrosse,Soccer, Football, Tennis, Cross Country, Track, Baseball, Volleyball, Ice Hockey, Cheerleading, and Wrestling

[edit] Varsity Football

In the mid-1980's Milton's football team lost 37 games in a row from 10.14.1983 to 10.2.1987, finally beating Shamrock 14 - 7 at home. This streak of futility was reportedly chronicled in Sports Illustrated at the time, but cannot be confirmed.

A thirteen-year, fourteen-game skid to rival Roswell was ended on 10.04.1996 in a 19 - 0 rout in Roswell's first game in their new stadium. Milton has annually played Roswell since 1970 lost to them twice in the 1994 season by virtue a double over-time first-round playoff thriller.

Milton has made the playoffs on six occassions since 1960 and sports an 0 - 6 record in those games:

  • 1999, McEachern 7 - 48 at McEachern
  • 1996, Douglass 0 - 14 at Lakewood Stadium
  • 1994, Marietta 14 - 28 at Marietta
  • 1993, Roswell 27 - 28 in Alpharetta **Double Overtime
  • 1992, Marietta 3 - 34 at Marietta
  • 1980, Columbia 14 - 31 in Alpharetta

[edit] Milton Cross Country

Milton Cross Country (nicknamed Milton XC) is an incredibly large team consisting of approximately 150 runners. Over the years the team has done well, consistently placing as runner-up in the region.

[edit] Top Flite Wolfpack

Top Flite Wolfpack basketball is a way for ten of Milton’s finest students to give back to the community. But, the Top Flite Wolfpack is not just contained within a ten man roster. The TFWP is a family. We have team moms. We have video technicians that are currently filming our first documentary. We have a team masseuse to ease the tension and kinks out of our muscles before and after games. We even have an official sandwich maker. I know, it sounds crazy, but all of this is real. You might be pinching yourself right now to make sure this is not the greatest dream of all time, but I am writing true words. In order to give back to the community the Top Flite Wolfpack Family is itself. Sure, all of us have different routes that we take to change the world, but the Top Flite Wolfpack changes it one person at a time by being themselves and making people change. There are dozens, if not hundreds of thousands of success stories out there. Just ask around, somebody will tell you that the Top Flite Wolfpack impacted their life in some way.

The Top Flite Wolfpack was created in January of 2005 by then sophomores Stephen McCloskey and Will Hammonds. As the youngest team in the Alpharetta Recreation and Parks Department Teen League the Wolfpack had a surprising inaugural season and made it to the championship game, where they lost after a heroic effort. The next couple seasons were mor of the same for the Top Flite Wolfpack; good seasons followed by dissapointments in the playoffs. In this, our senior year, the members of the Top Flite Wolfpack are looking to finish the job this time and bring home two championships.

If you would like to donate to the cause, please contact Will Hammonds or Stephen McCloskey, or e-mail us at TopFliteWolfpack@yahoo.com.

[edit] Band Program

Hard-working students, dedicated staff members, involved and active parents, and a supportive administration all combine to make it possible for the Milton High School Band program to offer an outstanding array of musical opportunities. They have won countless awards and exhibitioned and competed at national competitions, placing highly in many. The Milton Band does not only compete but they provide support at many sports venues such as football and basketball. In November of 2006 the Milton Marching Band (Marching Eagles) traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii. While there they played in a holiday parade, visited the USS Arizona Memorial, and played beside the USS Missouri, among other things.

[edit] Traditions

Freshmen Friday - The first Friday of every school year is a day of revenge and fear. Upperclassmen scare freshmen at the school into thinking they will be taped to polls, given wedgies, or freshmen fished (in which a carrabiner is strapped to the loop in a backpack and a long piece of rope. As the person walks forward someone yanks the rope and the victim goes flying). The main cause of the madness is the upperclassmen's remembrance of their own freshmen Friday. In recent years however, the tradition is slowly coming to an end as administrators have upped the penalties for such actions.

Junior/Senior Wars- Each year the juniors battle the seniors in junior/senior wars. While not an event endorsed by the high school, juniors and seniors alike attempt to "roll" each other's houses from the last night of spring break to the eve of prom. The "war" usually lasts about 2 weeks and has been a long standing tradition at Milton. In recent years the school has taken a stance to crack down on the "war" and the Alpharetta Police Department has become very adamant about putting an end to it, both saying that it causes unneeded damage to private property and takes away from the learning experience at the school. But hey! that's the fun of high school! The students still enjoy it very much though, and some are still brave enough to carry on this long standing tradition. The students even created a website to keep a count of which grade is in the lead as the two weeks progress! http://www.juniorseniorwar.com/
