Milliken & Co.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Milliken & Co. is the reportedly the largest privately held textile manufacturer in the world. The current Chairman of the Board is Roger Milliken, whose great grandfather founded the company in 1865. It's business operations and financial records are not public documents because of Millken's private ownership, however it is generally accepted that the company has more than 16,000 associates. Milliken's manufacturing operations are primarily located in South Carolina, the Southeastern US, and extend to 12 countries worldwide. Milliken & Company has been based in Spartanburg, South Carolina, since 1958. It is perhaps best known for its focus on research and development. Of the top US textile companies operating in the later half of the 1900's, it is the only one that has not undergone substantial reorganization or bankruptcy. The others (Burlington, West Point Pepperill, JP Stevens, Spring Mills, Dan River, etc.) have all either filed bankruptcy protection or have been merged/acquired.
