Milliarium is the Latin word for milestone, and the most famous of these was the Milliarium Aureum (the Golden Milestone) erected by the Emperor Augustus Caesar in the central Forum of Ancient Rome. All distances in the Roman Empire were measured relative to that point. Sadly, However, only the base of the milestone still exists.
