[edit] Militaryphotos.net forum
Perhaps the most frequently visited section of the website is the forum, home to users across the world, whose daily lives are involved in the military, civilian duty, or government work. The diverse user-base allows for an incredible amount of in-forum photo posting. These photo collections are perhaps the most-personal and thoughtful of the photos as they reveal the personalities and lives of the individual forum members. There have been a few topics that have been posted and have earned a lot of attention such as The Second World War and the nuclear program of Iran and a possible conflict between the US and its allies and Iran.
The forums have been known to frequently be biased towards the owner's opinions. Partially due to the large size of the forum, it also suffers from an inconsistent application of forum rules. Indicative in this respect is the regular "MP.net Dumbarse of the week" thread, which is sanstioned by the site admin. In this thread, a member who has posted controversial material in the previous week is selected, and the floor is opened for anyone who so wishes to abuse that member.
[edit] Finnish military abuse
On March 7 2005, a topic in the MilitaryPhotos.net "Off Topic and Humor" forum, titled "WTF is wrong with Finnish army ?" displayed photographs of Finnish conscripts being sexually humiliated by other conscripts. Reminiscent of the Abu Ghraib scandal, the photos show near naked soldiers on leashes, in sexual positions, and other awkward poses. The Finnish tabloid "Ilta Sanomat" first picked up the story and had a two page exclusive. The next day, a Finnish newspaper picked up the story and had a one page article describing the photos. However, by the time the Finnish newspaper reported the story, the photos were taken down, and the newspaper used a photo of Belgian military abuse. Some of these issues have sparked "flame wars" between the members of the forum. Such as a case with all Balkan related threads, they have caused such strong disargeement between the members and as a result all Balkan related threads have been locked and their posters sometimes banned.
The incidents are being investigated by the Finnish military. The Finnish Newspaper "HBL" dismisses the photos as "soldier humor".
[edit] Secret Soviet space-based laser battle station
On November 18, 2004, a member of Militaryphotos.net posted the photos of a secret Soviet space-based laser battlestation launched in 1987. The station encountered problems with its sensors and was forced to de-orbit into the Pacific Ocean. The member's father was personally involved in the mission.
[edit] Militaryvideos.net
As the popularity of the militaryphotos.net website increased, the site's owner decided to create another website: www.militaryvideos.net. The site has gained notoriety when the History Channel used footage submitted by a member of Militaryphotos.net and hosted on the Militaryvideos.net site.
