[edit] History
[edit] 1983 invasion
Marxist Prime Minister Maurice Bishop came to power in a bloodless coup in 1979. On 13 October 1983, Bishop was assassinated in a coup supported by the Grenada People's National Army. On October 25, Grenada was invaded by more than 7,000 military personnel from the United States, six Caribbean nations and Canada. They were resisted by fewer than 1,200 soldiers from the People's National Army, which was assisted by a small number of non-combat forces from Cuba and other Marxist countries. The coup leaders were arrested and a new government was appointed by the Governor-General.
