[edit] RfA thanks

Thank you very much for participating in my RFA, which closed successfully today with a result of (62/18/3). I will go very carefully at first, trying to make sure I don't mess up too badly using the tools, and will begin by re-reading all the high-quality feedback I received during the process, not least from those who opposed me. Any further advice/guidance will be gratefully accepted. I hope I will live up to your trust! Guinnog 14:04, 30 August 2006 (UTC)}

I found an answer to an old question of yours over at Talk:Logan O'Brien. Feel free to add the info to the article, I'm too lazy to do so myself... :) Mad Jack 07:56, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks, nice work. I wish we could have this level of detail with everyone we were curious about... Mad Jack 08:12, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Citations

I noticed that, when you cite something, you add in a whole quote and a link in these - []. The MLA style we should usually use is like the one used in Mandy Moore, without a quote at all, just info on the source. I know I've been using nothing but quotes on the X-whatevers lists, but I just thought that'd be better for the lists and informative to the reader. In the case of regular articles, though... Mad Jack 19:34, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Actually, that's exactly why we should cite it the MLA style. So anyone can look up exactly where the info came from the in the first place (i.e., random example, one of the articles at Sara Paxton (the one regarding her father's part Irish ancestry) is no longer online, but we have the name of the newspaper and title of the article, which would be helpful in looking it up again, off line) Mad Jack 19:38, 31 August 2006 (UTC)
Are you saying including these large quotes is better? I'm pretty sure the MLA/Mandy Moore thing is under Wikipedia:Citing sources. Mad Jack 19:41, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

Wow-you got right on that one, didn't you!

[edit] A RfA thank you from en:User:Xyrael

WikiThanks
I'd like to thank you Mike 7 for either supporting, opposing, commenting, nominating, reading, editing, promoting and/or anything else that you may have done for my successful request for adminship (I've broken the one thousand sysop barrier!); I'm thanking you for getting involved, and for this I am very grateful. I hope to be able to serve Wikipedia more effectively with my new tools and that we can continue to build our free encyclopedia, for knowledge is power, but only wisdom is liberty. Please do feel free to get in touch if you feel you can improve me in any way; I will be glad to listen to all comments. Again, thanks 8)             —Xyrael / 11:58, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Long-Overdue RfA Thanks from Alphachimp

Thanks for your support in my not-so-recent RfA, which was successful with a an overwhelmingly flattering and deeply humbling total of 138/2/2 (putting me #10 on the RfA WP:100). I guess infinite monkey theorem has been officially proven. Chimps really can get somewhere on Wikipedia.

With new buttons come great responsibility, and I'll try my best to live up to your expectations. If you need assistance with something, don't hesitate to swing by my talk page or email me (trust me, I do respond :)). The same goes for any complaints or comments in regard to my administrative actions. Remember, I'm here for you.

When you added the Italian-Americans category to Ann Prentiss 3 months ago, did you notice the outrageous claims that this woman was convicted for some horrible crimes and is serving a prison sentence? They were introduced with the creation of the page.... Are they true? Because, if they're not, Wikipedia is very, very lucky to not have gotten sued.... Mad Jack 08:08, 12 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] IP Ban Warning???

Hello, I receved a message via userTalk about some reported vadalism on a page I have never visited and did not tamper with. I just want to make sure that if there is someone on the same IP as me, that I do not lose the ability to add to the Wikipedia resources. I think the whole site is great and use it regularly for site material and research. although I have not become an active member in modifying or adding information to topics, I know in the future I will at some point and would be more than disapointed if I was unable to help the Wikipedia community.

The following is the message I received from the user Æon:

________________________________________________________________

User talk:209.79.208.46 From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search

This is the only warning you will receive. Your recent vandalism to Oceanography will not be tolerated. The next time you vandalize a page, you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. A link to the edit I have reverted can be found here: link. If you believe this edit should not have been reverted, please contact me. Æon Insane Ward 22:05, 16 August 2006 (UTC) ________________________________________________________________

I just weant to ensure I do not get caught up in whatever vandalism issues are going on as an innocent by-stander.

Thank you for your time & thanks for the work on this great online resource! I have taken a minute to create an account in the hopes that this will not happen again.

[edit] Helping out with the backlog

Hi there and congratulations on your brand new sysop flag. Now that you are an admin, you might want to help the community in a way you weren't able to before. The obvious example is clearing out the Category:Administrative backlog :-) You might want to start with Wikipedia:Requested moves which I find the easiest to deal with. If you have any questions, just drop me a note! Enjoy! :-) --Dijxtra 09:04, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] September Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

[edit] Talk:Sean Hayes

Is there any reason why you added a controversial tag to Talk:Sean Hayes (actor)? The article doesn't seem all that controversial to me. Orpheus 19:55, 23 September 2006 (UTC)

The debate on the talk page is ancient, and the additions to the page itself can be categorised as either "uncontroversially reverted childish comments" or "non-sexuality related changes". There seems to be no current controversy. Orpheus 22:47, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
At the time you added the template, the last relevant talk comment was already 3 months old, and an unspoken consensus seems to have been reached on the page itself. I don't think it is relevant, so I'll remove the tag.

[edit] False request

I did not make this request. [1] I assume this was a case of vandalism. Will you please restore it? Rfrisbietalk 04:14, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the restore. Actually, now that you told me how you saw it, that's about the fourth time it has happened. Whenever someone puts one of those particular userbox language group templates up for deletion, any page that displays them shows up in the speedy deletion category too. I've seen three or four directory pages at a time show up that way. Other folks have just let me know about it and I track down the offending template. I usually can spot the other directory pages and fix them too. Another wikiday in the life. Thanks again. Rfrisbietalk 22:28, 29 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Show me the policy

You deleted my comment on Nancy Grace's discussion page citing NPOV. Why? Not only that but you deleted it saying that I shouldn't put content as "fact" when it is not. Yet if you read the passage I wrote there, it was discussing the nature of if it was fact or not. Since when does NPOV apply to the discussion pages? I just looked and couldn't find it. Where is it? Jason Quinn 18:53, 30 September 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for your reply on my talk page. However I remain unconvinced of your points. I asked for you to show me any policy that says NPOV applies to the discussion pages. The NPOV policy refers to the ARTICLE. The closest Wikipedia's policy comes is that it says NPOV also applies to "user-facing content" (whatever that is because I have not yet found a defintion for it). My comments were not "soapbox" orientated but were designed to discuss the very nature of NPOV and what its intent is. In any case, I have reworded my points and eliminated the material that I think you forsaw as objectionable. I see nothing left that should warrent any sort of revert. Jason Quinn 03:54, 1 October 2006 (UTC)
