Mikontalo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mikontalo is a large student housing complex in Hervanta, Tampere, Finland. Its exact address is Insinöörinkatu 60, 33720 Tampere, Finland.
With affordable rents, easy availability and location near Tampere University of Technology, it is popular dwelling for first year students and exchange students.
Mikontalo was built during period 1978–1980. It consists of 4 blocks with 12 floors where 768 dwellings are situated. Mikontalo offers for its inhabitants also saunas [two each building], public lounge with a TV-set [closed by administration during 2005 because of vandalism by foreign students], laundry room [5 washing and 2 drying machines], cable TV and, of course, connection to the Internet.
Coming back after a night downtown, at around 4:30 in the morning, the international students are used to singing "Mikontalo wake up" as soon as they get in front of the building. It has been observed that such disturbing attitude of exchange students, along with the noisy parties taking place in dwellings, has awakened racist discussions in Mikontalo's chatroom in IRCNet.
According to word of mouth, Mikontalo is the biggest dwelling building in Finland, and even in Nordic Countries. This is however hard to confirm.
