[edit] Background

Born Michael Theodore Malinin, in Washington, D.C., Malinin grew up in Miami, Florida. He went to high school at Ransom Everglades, where he was active in the Concert Band, musicals, and the Mixed Desmids rock band. After high school, he attended the University of North Texas in Denton. He performed with several rock acts there, including Last Rites, The Cowtippers and Caulk (members, with Baboon and Brutal Juice, of Denton's "Fraternity of Noise"). He even tried his hand at producing, putting together a Cheap Trick tribute album Heaven on a Stick, featuring contributions from many Denton and Dallas bands. Eventually Malinin dropped out of college and moved to Los Angeles, California, where he played with the band Careless until he joined the Goo Goo Dolls.

His first recording with the Goo Goo Dolls was "Don't Change" for the Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls soundtrack.
