Mike Haggar is a video game character from both the Saturday Night Slam Masters and Final Fight series. He has also made cameos and is referenced in the Street Fighter series. He was a professional wrestler who was formerly a street fighter, and mayor of Metro City.

He is 46 years old during the events of the original Final Fight. He is 40 years old during the original Slam Masters (although his profile in the English version states he is the "former mayor of Metro City" ) and 50 in Final Fight 2 (according to the Japanese version) although much of the latter game's story was mutated by the Street Fighter Alpha series, including date. Haggar is 63 during the events of Final Fight: Streetwise.

[edit] Story

During the Slam Masters series he wrestled for the CWA (Capcom Wrestling Association) for many years, with his daughter, Jessica, coming to the ring to celebrate his victories. There, he trained his successors Biff Slamkovich and Gunloc (known as Alexei Zalazof and Lucky Colt in Japan). During this time, former CWA wrestling great Victor Ortega came out of retirement, while Haggar was running for mayor of Metro City. He won the election, campaigning on a promise to reduce crime and break the power of the many gangs in the cities, but this would make him many enemies in the city's underworld.

In the original Final Fight, Haggar got a phone call one day from a mysterious Mad Gear member (who turned out to be the Caribbean drug dealer Damnd). He was told that if he did not let the Mad Gear gang run around controlling the city as many previous mayors did, his daughter would be killed. Rather than giving into the gang's demands, Haggar teamed up with Cody and Guy to save Jessica from Belger, the leader of the Mad Gear gang. As the group battled through Metro City, he was responsible for defeating Damnd and later the giant professional wrestler Abigail in a clash of the titans. He was so drained from that battle that Guy and Cody were left to pursue Belger uptown, but he did re-unite with his friends at the very end to confront Belger personally in a great battle. He rushed over to Jessica when the battle was won and swore he'd always keep her safe.

Jessica went missing again in Final Fight Revenge, and Haggar went out to find her and attempt to defeat the Mad Gear once more, which was beginning to reform. Since Jessica is seen in Final Fight 3, he obviously succeeded in the former task but failed in the latter. Andore attempted to challenge Haggar for the position of mayor in a wrestling match during a broadcast, but this was never aired and Haggar never knew of the challenge.

Final Fight 2 brought forth the new Mad Gear, which had begun recruiting members in an effort to spread its operations all across the world. They kidnapped the 37th Bushin Master, Genryusai, and his daughter (and Guy's fiancé) Rena. With the help of Rena's sister Maki, a Bushinryu fighter, and Carlos (a sword-wielding boarder that stayed with Haggar), he traveled the world and defeated the group's new leader, Retu. This time, Mad Gear was truly destroyed.

In Street Fighter Alpha 2, former Mad Gear member Rolento Schugerg started up his own gang of militants and actually besieged Metro City with tanks. Haggar, though not playable in the game, is seen in Rolento's ending and stopped the madman before he could do great harm to the city.

In Final Fight 3, Haggar had to rid Metro City of the Skull Cross gang, the latest gang threat to Metro City. Led by the militant, Black, the Skull Cross gang capitalized on the demise of Mad Gear by causing havoc throughout the city. Guy, Metro City SCU officer Lucia Morgan and street fighter Dean (who wanted revenge on Skull Cross for murdering his family) backed up Haggar. Eventually, the four took down Black and the city was saved, but left in shambles from the battle. Afterwards, Haggar was never re-elected as mayor.

In Final Fight: Streetwise, Haggar runs a gym, 'Mike's Mat and Muscle', and a dock 'Mike's Maritime Maintenance'. He has seemingly isolated himself from most of Metro City, and says many of its citizens have forgotten about him. He aids Kyle by teaching him grappling moves.

Haggar in Final Fight wore green trousers with brown shoes and a brown strap over his right shoulder -- his most recognizable outfit. In Slam Masters he wore green tights with red trim and wrestling boots. Final Fight 2 saw him wear leather pants with armored boots, and in Final Fight 3 he grew a long ponytail and wore an outfit similar to his wrestling gear in Slam Masters. In Final Fight: Streetwise, Haggar wears black gloves and shoes, a green tanktop with cargo pants, complete with the original brown strap.

[edit] Rivalry with Zangief

Though they have never been in the same game as playable characters, Haggar and Street Fighter character/pro wrestler, Zangief, are rivals. Both men copied the other's signature move. Zangief first copied Haggar's Double Lariat, Haggar then copied Zangief's Spinning Piledriver in rebuttal.

[edit] Quotes

  • "Once I grab ya... You're going for a ride!" (before a match in Saturday Night Slam Masters)
  • "Drop me a line so I can visit your hospital room!" (after a win in Saturday Night Slam Masters)

[edit] Trivia

  • Haggar's win pose in the Slam Masters series, in which he lifts Jessica onto his shoulder, is reminiscent of the "Macho Man" Randy Savage and the late Miss Elizabeth. His nickname in the series, Mike "Macho" Haggar, also pays tribute to the former wrestling star.
  • Haggar was the mayor of Metro City (both chronologically via canon storyline and the first Final Fight's release in the arcade) before a real-life former wrestler, Jesse Ventura, became mayor of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.
  • Haggar is one of many Capcom characters to be included in Namco x Capcom, and it's his first appearance in a non-Final Fight game as a playable character since Slam Masters 2. He is voiced by Tessho Genda, who also voiced his rival Zangief in the Capcom vs. SNK series.
  • Haggar makes an appearance as (fittingly) the mayor of the city in which Team Laser Explosion reside in the internet cartoon Weebl & Bob.
