  • On September 13, 1983, Fitzgerald became the 48th player in Major League history to hit a home run in his first Major League at-bat. He hit a solo homer off pitcher Tony Ghelfi of the Phillies.
  • On December 14, 1984, the Montreal Expos trade catcher Gary Carter to the New York Mets for OF Hubie Brooks, C Mike Fitzgerald, OF Herm Winningham and minor leaguer Floyd Youmans.
