Mike Cofer

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

James Michael "Mike" Cofer (born February 19, 1964, in Columbia, South Carolina), was a former American professional football player. A 6'2", 197 lbs. kicker from North Carolina State University, Cofer kicked in the NFL for 8 seasons from 1987-1993 and 1995. He was the kicker for the San Francisco 49ers when they won back-to-back Super Bowls in 1988 and 1989.

Cofer had a strong leg and was consistent for the 49ers in the late 1980s. However, fans lost faith in him early in the 1990s as he missed several short field goals, the lowest point being in 1991 where he made just 13 of 25 attempts. Despite his struggles, he was known as one of the more clutch kickers of his time, hitting many game-winning field goals and kicks greater than 50 yards in distance.
