someone explain to me how come the name changes from "maito gai" to "might guy" then back again over and over all the time - kaizen@june2

IMDb lists him as Gai Maito for the English translation of the anime, I don't know what the English translation of the manga uses, but my guess would be Maito Gai as the names are not westernized in the manga. Jay32183 17:19, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Also name Maito Gai (マイト・ガイ) is spelt out in katakana. Foreign names are almost always spelt out in katakana, while Japanese names very rarely. Whoever keeps changing Might Guy to Maito Gai, please knock it off. His official, canonical name is given as Might Guy in both the US and Japan; nothing you can say or do will change it back to Gai. Please save us all a headache and stop it. I don't want to see this page locked down just because someone can't come to grips with his name not being in romaji and changing it EVERY SINGLE DAY to satiate themselves. In Japanese, there is no way for a word to end in a "t" sound so that is where we get "Maito" from Gai's name, just like "Matt" becomes "Matto"- aengusnokitsune —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Aengusnokitsune (talk • contribs) .
You seem to be confused. The actual transliteration of his name is indeed "Maito Gai" (マイト・ガイ), which is how "Might Guy" would be pronounced in Japanese. --Pentasyllabic 14:35, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Back to seriousness. There's something I'm confused on. Is Guy like Lee in that he can't use nin/genjutsu, or does he simply not choose to? I know he summoned that turtle once, but I'm not clear on whether or one such as Lee could do that with a scroll regardless of the handicap?

Does that mean a summoning does not count as a justsu? because in the thing where jiraiya taught naruto to summon a member of the gama family, Naruto had to use the kyubi's chakra to summon (i think gamabunta) the frog boss. Lee is capable of using chakra for basic things (tree-climbing, water-walking, etc), but can't use any ninjutsu or genjutsu. It's likely a matter of focus. – Someguy0830 (Talk | contribs) 18:36, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

He can be seen walking on water during Team Guy's battle with Kisame, and if he can walk on water it stands to reason he can climb trees. ~SnapperTo 21:24, 6 October 2006 (UTC)


Lee was stated to be incapable of moulding chakra throughout his body, so if he can concentrate it into his feet, why not the rest? I thought walking on water was one of the harder feats to accomplish, since naruto had such trouble with it? I could be mistaken, though.
That's the thing. Tree-climbing and Water walking aren't chakra-moulding, they're chakra releasing exersizes. It's just a release of energy instead of using Hand Seals to radically transform it. 151.151.21.105 19:52, 7 December 2006 (UTC)

here are links to screenshot and manga panel where gai alludes to an alternative way of dealing with sharingan besides just focusing on the feet. unfortunately, he had no time to teach it to asuma and kurenai, as they had itachi to deal with.

Even though its a name in katakana and that of a fictional character, its a japanese characters name and as such, shouldn't we play it out as such? The japanese and worldwide fan whom recieved the series via fansubs and scantalations know him as Gai, thusly making the number far more Gai than Guy as I'm aware. I wont change it this moment, considering it will only make for a wiki-war of changes. Honestly a debate like this is fairly pointless. Say Maito Gai outloud. You get Might Guy with a Japanese accent. And if official sources have stated that the intended name was in fact Might Guy, then that means the other spelling is basically just how it fits with another languages phonetics. Sorry to cross series' here, but that sounds to me like going to Dragon Ball articles and pushing for Pikkoro and Bejita (while the former is named for the intrument and and the latter is a pun on the English word vegetable). It's one thing if it's a Japanese name that's "changed," but another if it's an English name that had the spelling adapted for Japanese. When using English, it's perfectly acceptable to use English spellings of those words. Onikage725

There really isn't much point to this argument, as stated above. I for one use "Maito Gai", because it is what I am used to and not canonly incorrect by pronounciation terms. However, in text, it has been stated to be Might Guy. It's not that big of a deal or change. I also spell Hyuga as "Hyuuga", when it's canon text is not that way. People just need to deal with the canon text and go on their merry little way.

All the names were switched to Western order for the English anime except for Gai's and Lee's...was there any particular reason?

This page is getting vandalized and fixed to the point that it feels like it's changing every hour, and it is always switching the spelling of the name from Might Guy to Maito Gai and back. It's really starting to become annoying. Since many of the edits are coming from anonymous IPs, is it possible to partially lock the page so that anons can't make edits? At least until they get the point and stop trying to change the name. The ones who have usernames can at least be dealt with via temp bans and such. --Djseifer 20:11, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

The picture is alright, but yeah. Perhaps something moreso just showing Guy. Not a big deal, though. A lot of this article seems to have boring elitism in it. The constant bickering amongst fans as to what Gai/Guy's real name is is just lame and nerdy. Also, a lot of it can spark lame fanboy debate. Guy could not keep up with training a thirteen year old Lee for comical reasons, and yet he has the stamina to open 6 gates/the 6th gate after running for three days, use a high-powered jutsu, fight someone with his exact abilities, then run back to Konoha with Kakashi on his back.

Secondly, isn't it still unknown whether or not Guy opened 6 gates in succession or only the 6th gate? Either way, it was either an amazing display of Mastery of the Gates and his own chakra, or an amazing display of stamina (since he was not tired afterwards, when the Gates are known to cause immense pain). Also, while it definitely should be noted that Itachi has warned not to underestimate Guy twice, the mentioning of Itachi narrowing his eyes at Guy could make a lot of Itachi fanboys call the wahhmbulance.

A major problem on Wikipedia concerning the information on the Naruto characters seems to be that while the jutsu/fighting style content is abundant, content on someone's actual personalities, relationships, and personal status is not. People will mention little things like a comical scene of Guy, at 26 years old, talking about his youth powers fading, and......well, Tenten's buns. And her name resemblance to a panda's name.


If you're going to mention tiny irrelavent scenes and tidbits, why not mention them all?

This is in reference to a line I read in Rock Lee's page. It said Guy can open at least six of the gates, as shown during his fight against a clone of Kisame Hoshigaki and I'm not sure if I understood it correctly. Does this mean Guy opened all six gates against Kisame's body double or did he just opened the sixth gate alone? On the manga, I read he just opened the sixth gate alone. --Beef noodles 18:43, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

Well, isn't my question about a certain article? I just wanted to make sure that what was written on the article is correct. I posted it here on this page since the inquiry is about this character who apparently has his own wikipage. I'll read that chapter again to make sure but from what I recall, all he said was "I have no choice... Open sixth gate!!!" something like that. It doesn't seem right that he actually had to open all six gates to fight an opponent using only 30% of his abilities. It's possible that he just wanted to finish the fight right away to save his team but shouldn't he be at least unable to move after the effects of the technique (opening the other gates) wear off? Guy didn't show any extreme sign of fatigue after that fight. --Beef noodles 20:19, 17 September 2006 (UTC)
From what I've seen regarding the gates (note: Kakashi also opened one, I think up to 2nd when rock climbing and about to fall) they are opened successively. They seem to become more dangerous the further you go, so no one would open a larger gate without opening the lower ones first. Tyciol 12:56, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

But Gai is a few minutes later fighting his own clone isn't he? He doesn't show fatigue or anything. A person might recover from opening one gate within a few minutes, as Lee did while fighting Gaara, but six? Seems unlikely. Could the Sixth gate be a prerequisite to Morning Peacock by itself?


It's either Gai/Guy opened the sixth gate on it's own, showing intense mastery of the gates(impressive) against a VERY powerful, 30% Kisame(impressive on Kisame's end)....or that Gai/Guy opened six gates, performed a high-powered jutsu after running for three days, showed no fatigue afterwards and fought his clone...then...ran back to Konoha with Kakashi on his back. This..would make him a stamina beast. So either way, it's all good.

Seeing as how this page is constantly being edited, I'd like to know how half of it is relavent and not just something to instigate lame fanboy discussion. While one can mention Itachi's warning and high regards to Guy and not underestimating him, mentioning a narrowing of his eyes is taking things a bit out of context, as we don't really know if Itachi was narrowing his eyes at Guy in general, or the fact that they were being interrupted.

Also it is not known yet whether or not Guy opened the sixth gate only, or opened six gates in succession.

Didn't this only happen once when Guy hugged Lee? Yep, only during their introduction. With this added on, including a scene of a 26-27 year old Guy comically whining and musing sadly of his youth fading, and extra mentions of how OMGDISTURBED!11 all of the kids were at Kakashi on Guy's back....half of this stuff seems irrelavent to Guy's role in the manga. You might as well add everything comical he ever does.

Half of the translations of that entire scene had the children completely overreacting, and Neji shouting "Hell no!" to Lee's offer, when the original translation has Neji stating "Absolutely not." to Lee's offer, with the kids having a much more tamed and comical reaction to Guy and Kakashi. Also, I feel like crying about little things that don't matter. So.

To try and address your points:
  1. Itachi seems to narrow his eyes a lot, so saying that he does so at Guy probably means very little. However, when Guy comments that he had already taken into consideration how to fight Itachi, Itachi immediately gets his own panel where his eyes seem to be slightly narrower than usual, so it seems that this comment at least provoked a response.
  2. The article doesn't dismiss the fact that he opened earlier gates; it merely states that he opened the sixth gate to using the Morning Peacock.
  3. I can only recall seeing a sunset in a video game, so I don't know how often it has actually happened in the actual series (more specifically, the anime, as I don't remember seeing that in the manga).
  4. The things you listed are about the extent of Guy's hilarity, though the reason they're mentioned is to illustrate that Guy is more "zany" than most of the other characters.
  5. I fail to see how the differing translations of the piggyback scene applies to this article, or at least how what you pointed out applies to the article, as your links don't work.
  6. Don't know about his favorite phrase, though I agree that the mitt thing could use a clarification.
