The Migration to Medina was an event on the 9 September 622 where Muhammad prepared his small community of Meccan Muslims to migrate to Medina.

This event came to be the turning point for the Muslims, from being oppresed and persecuted, to becoming independet.

In Muslim view, this event was prophecised in the Bible, Book of Isaiah, chapter 21 [citation needed].

Muhammad, preaching the doctrines of one God and the threat of the Day of Judgment, did not at first have much success in the city of Mecca. His tribe, the Quraysh, which was in charge of the Kaaba, persecuted and harassed him continuously, until an assassination attempt forced him to flee the city.

Before the migration, Muhammad meet with twelve representatives of the Ansar, who pledged Islam and helped him spread it to Medina[1]. These where:

He and his followers (the "Muhajirun") emigrated to the city of Yathrib, 320 km north of Mecca, in September 622 CE.

Day 1: Thursday 26 Safar AH 1, 9 September 622: Left home in Mecca. Stayed three days in the Cave of Thawr near Mecca.

Narrated Abu Bakr: I was with the Prophet in the Cave. When I raised my head, I saw the feet of the people. I said, "O Allah's Apostle! If some of them should look down, they will see us." The Prophet said, "O Abu Bakr, be quiet! (For we are) two and Allah is the Third of us." [3]

Day 5: Monday 1 Rabi' I AH 1, 13 September 622: Left the environs of Mecca. Traveled to the region of Yathrib.

Day 12: Monday 8 Rabi' I AH 1, 20 September 622: Arrived at Quba' near Medina.

Day 16: Friday 12 Rabi' I AH 1, 24 September 622: First visit to Medina for Friday prayers.

Yathrib was soon renamed "City of the Prophet" (Arabic: "Madinat un-Nabi"), or just "City" (Arabic: "Medina")

The people that participiated in this event came to be known as the Muhajerin. a list includes:


After their arrival to Medina, 73 people pledged alligance to Muhamamd [1]. a list includes:

  2. Abu Umamah [2]

In 622 when the Prophet arrived in Medina he paired off each Muhajir with one of the Ansar, joining Muhammad ibn Maslamah with Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah [8].

In Medina, the Muslims could be safe for the first time in many years.

Many decades after this event, during the caliphat of Umar, Ali proposed and it was decided that the Islamic year was to be based on the date of this event.
