Midori liqueur

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Midori is a bright green-coloured melon-flavoured cordial made by Suntory. It is manufactured in Mexico, though it was originally made in Japan. It began life in 1978 with a launch party held in New York's infamous Studio 54.

Midori is used as in ingredient in cocktails; for example, a Midori Illusion. Midori is usually mixed with lemonade, fresh lemon juice, lime juice, pineapple juice or orange juice. Midori is 21% alcohol by volume, but as it is a mixer, the actual amount used in a single drink is usually one shot (33 mL). If a higher alcohol content is desired in the beverage, Malibu may also be used in the drink. Midori is extremely sweet, so adding a tangy fruit juice modifies a drink's flavor to offset the sugary taste.

Popular in Australia is the drink "Raiders Lime", which consists of Midori and Milk. It is the drink of choice among many Rugby League fans and is named for its resemblance in colour to the jumper of the Canberra Raiders rugby league club. It is customary to chant "Na Na Na Na" to the tune of the Raiders theme song while consuming Raiders Lime.

The name comes from midori, the Japanese word for "green".
