Middle Country Central School District
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Middle Country Central School District (MCCSD) at Centereach covers approximately 16 square miles in the Township of Brookhaven. It is composed of the villages and hamlets of Centereach, Selden, parts of Lake Grove, Coram, Lake Ronkonkoma, Port Jefferson Station and Farmingville.
The district was formed in 1957 through the consolidation of the Selden and Centereach school districts. At the time, it consisted of five kindergarten rooms and 51 elementary classrooms.
After consolidation, the area moved into a period of unprecedented growth, resulting in Middle Country becoming the fastest growing school district in the state. Yesterday, the district is composed of eight elementary schools, two Pre-Kindergarten/Kindergarten Centers, two middle schools, and two high schools.
The student population peaked in 1976 at 16,738. The K-12 student enrollment projection for the 2005/06 school year is approximately 11,000 plus over 500 pre-kindergarten students.
The School Budget for the 2006/07 school year has passed but in the Dawnwood Middle School it has cut the 4:50 pm buses for students who now have to be picked up while leaving the 3:40 pm bus. Also a brief change has happened in the 2006/07 school year such as the principal has changed and also no backpacks are allowed while school is in session but they are allowed to bring them to school and in their locker. Which has made many students angry because some have to go from one side of the school to the other with their books.
