Mickey Avalon

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mickey Avalon is a rap/punk musician from Hollywood, California. His debut self-titled solo album, released Nov. 7, 2006 on Interscope/Shoot to Kill Records in association with MySpace Records, blends dark, lewd, and humorous lyrical hooks with hip-hop beats. In many of Avalon's songs, he raps about drug abuse and prostitution. Even the background of the intro to his official website is a page of call girl ads [1]. He had once worked as a hustler to support his heroin habit, and both his father and sister died from consequences related to their own drug addictions. His mother had divorced his father because of his heroin addicton, and to make ends meet, she became a marijuana dealer, eventually teaching Avalon how to deal as well. When his own heroin addiction became apparent, however, she fired him. [2]

Avalon is close friends with actor and former MTV VJ Simon Rex, who has encouraged Avalon to write lyrics and perform ever since Mickey was broke and living on Rex's sofa. Avalon soon gained an enthusiastic following in Hollywood's decadent club scene. [3]

Mickey Avalon's paternal grandparents are Holocaust survivors; both endured lasting injuries from their imprisonment at Auschwitz. His grandfather had been a subject of one of Dr. Josef Mengele's experiments and was partially paralyzed for months after the Allied liberation. His grandmother was mauled by one of officer Amon Goethe's attack dogs. The rest of the family perished. Stories of his grandparents' experiences at Auschwitz were a significant part of Avalon's coming of age. [4]

This paragraph, taken from his MySpace page in December 2006, is a vignette of who Mickey Avalon is and how he came to be.

Remember the boy next door that played records all day, and at night kept you up with songs of his own? He left home one day and was never heard from again. He moved to the big city, living in cheap motels, eating dollar hamburgers, working the boulevard with ex-models, thorazine freaks, transvestites, mothers, fathers, drunks, junkies and punk rockers alike. He struggled during many long lonely desperate nights under the dizzying city lights but made a vow that he would never forget the magic in this world the things he loved the most: his first fix, his first girl and most importantly the first time he rocked a mic. Mickey Avalon has done whatever it took to get him to and off Hollywood Blvd. to invite you into his world. And I guess thats what it is, his world.
