Born in Denver, Colorado to a working-class family, Michelle Torrez showed early promise as an artist. She graduated from the Colorado Institute of Art in 1987, taking a job as art director for an advertising agency. She formed a mural-painting company in 1994, but soon thereafter left the company to focus on her own art. Her work has blossomed since the start of the 21st century, and she has gained international and nation acclaim. In 2003, Torrez was selected by the US Ambassador to Bulgaria, James Pardew, to participate in the 'Art in Embassies Program'. This program includes such renowned artists as John Singer Sargent, Wolf Kahn, and N.C. Wyeth. Torrez has been featured in many publications, including Southwest Art, Colorado Expressions, La Voz, and Image Magazine.
