Michael Solomon Alexander

Michael Solomon Alexander (1799-1845) was the first Anglican bishop of Jerusalem.

Born and educated in Germany in the Jewish faith, he emigrated to England and became a private tutor. He converted to Christianity in 1825 and moved to Dublin where he taught Hebrew and was ordained in 1827.

After ordination, he worked for the Society for Promoting Christianity among Jews, 1827-30, being based in Danzig. He was professor of Hebrew at King's College London from 1832 until 1841 and helped to revise the Society's translation of the New Testament into Hebrew in 1835. He was appointed bishop of the United Church of England and Ireland in Jerusalem in 1841. He died in Egypt while returning to England.
