Michael Shannon (born 1974, Lexington, Kentucky) is an American stage and film actor.

He began his career as a stage actor in Chicago, where he helped found A Red Orchid Theatre. He has since worked with Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Northlight Theatre, and other groups. He originated the role of Peter Evans in Bug (the play) in 2004[1], and is also starring in Bug (the film) with Ashley Judd and Harry Connick, Jr. The film is directed by The Exorcist-director William Friedkin, and is ready for a wide release in 2007. His role on stage in Bug, and as Chris Smith in Killer Joe, and Harry in Man From Nebraska, is written by Steppenwolf ensemble member, Tracy Letts. Shannon has appeared in several shows in the West End in London, including a production of Woyzeck directed by Sarah Kane. His first film appearance was in Groundhog Day in 1993.
