[edit] Effective Therapy
Hurd's 1997 book Effective Therapy encourages people to practice introspective methods and rely on psychotherapy only as an occasional or last resort. It demonstrates how underlying philosophical ideas have an impact on everyday life. It shows people how to avoid the dangers of most contemporary therapies and to rely on their own judgment when facing psychological problems.
[edit] Grow Up America!
Michael J. Hurd's 2000 book Grow Up America! proposes Dr. Hurd's idea of a "one-stop-shopping guide to happy, responsible living." It discusses everyday life—love, political correctness, volunteerism, competence, self-esteem—from what the author calls a "provocative and ruthlessly honest point of view." Grow Up America! discusses the "cliches and excuses" from the media and government, and proposes that happiness and satisfaction come from "taking personal responsibility".
When released, the book received reviews which hailed it as a "landmark in writing from a psychologist's perspective on American culture and society."
The book demonstrates Dr. Hurd's straightforward and blunt writing style with regard to issues.
