Michael Robert Brown (born January 25, 1977 in Hartlepool, England), is a professional footballer who plays in a midfield position for Fulham in the English Premiership. Brown is notable for his controversy, after tackles on players such as Sean Davis, Ryan Giggs and Ashley Cole.

Brown's early career comprised over 250 league games mainly in a Sheffield United shirt where he scored 22 midfield goals in the 2002-03 season and won 'Player of the Year' award. He previously for Manchester City, Hartlepool United, and Portsmouth (the latter two on loan).

He was bought from United by David Pleat for Spurs and proved a highly dependable if unspectacular stalwart contributing 46 appearances and four goals up until the end of the 2004-05 season. Although well appreciated by fans for his hard work and honest contribution, the strengthening of the Spurs midfield under Martin Jol threatened Brown's position in the team. On January 31, 2006 he left Spurs to join Fulham

[edit] Controversy

Brown was sent-off after a two-footed challenge on Portsmouth midfielder Sean Davis during a match between Fulham and Pompey on April 1, 2006. It was later revealed by Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp that the two players did not see "eye-to-eye" together from their time at Spurs.

Some Manchester United fans were incensed, for a short period after his tackle on Ryan Giggs in their 5-1 victory over Fulham on August 20, 2006. Brown received a yellow card for this. Brown was once again in controversy after he appeared to stamp on Chelsea player Ashley Cole on September 23, 2006 during Fulham's match against them. This time, however, the tackle went unpunished by the referee.
