Michael Brooks (born March 1, 1964) is an American historian and investigative journalist.

As a journalist he currently writes for the Toledo Free Press, and his work has been published in a variety of local, regional, and national periodicals. He achieved a level of notoriety for his blog and print coverage of the North Toledo riot on October 15, 2005; having correctly predicted the violence that ensued, his real-time blog coverage provided images and news reports faster and more accurately than the mainstream media.[citation needed]

Brooks won Touchstone Awards in 2004 and 2005 for best news articles in a non-daily periodical, awarded by the Toledo Press Club.[1] He was also awarded an Ohio Newspaper Association award in 2005 for his coverage of conditions at the Toledo Jeep facility, which has been translated into German, Spanish, and Portuguese versions.

As an academic Brooks teaches at the University of Toledo, and has research interests in epidemiological history, European expansion, and Central Asian history. His work has been published in a variety of peer-reviewed journals, and he has contributed chapters to several academic texts, including the forthcoming Natives and Newcomers: Great Lakes Peoples (2006).
