Michael Bettaney

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michael Bettany was an intelligence officer working in the Counter-espionage branch of MI5 who was convicted at the Old Bailey in 1984 of offences under the Official Secrets Act after passing sensitive documents to the Soviet Embassy in London and attempting to act as an agent-in-place for the Soviet Union. His role as a Soviet spy was uncovered by Oleg Gordievsky, a KGB officer turned MI6 agent, who was working inside the KGB residency in the Soviet Embassy in London at the time Bettany offered his services. Bettany was sentenced to 23 years in prison, and was released on parole in 1998.
