Mianus, Connecticut

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mianus is one of many neighborhoods located within the Town of Greenwich, Connecticut.

The community is located in a river valley formed by the Mianus River. It is home to North Mianus School, an elementary school. The Mianus River is dammed at East Putnam Avenue. The dam separates the tidal salt water estuary from the fresh water river. The area above the dam is called Mianus Pond. Mianus Pond is wonderful for swimming on a hot summer day. The land to the east slopes significantly and cables were hung from overhanging trees so that one can swing out and drop into the water. The pond is also wonderful for ice skating in the winter and is the site of many hockey games.

Mianus was featured in a segment of the MTV show Jackass in which Johnny Knoxville made fun of the town's name by pronouncing it "my anus", for example "Is there is a school in my anus?" and "Does anyone famous live in my anus?"; and the segment culminated by visiting the sewage treatment facility of Mianus.

The area and the river are named after the chief of the Siwanoy Tribe of Native Americans that inhabited the area when Europeans first encountered them. The Siwanoys sold areas of what is now called Old Greenwich to the first English settlers of the town for "40 English Coates" in 1640.
