M/F Dunkerque is the first of three sister vessels designed for the cross channel route of Dover to Dunkerque. The Maersk Dunkerque is a state of the art Scandinavian designed vessel built at the Samsung Shipyards in South Korea. She is a so called Ro-pax(The acronym ROPAX describes a Roll-on roll-off vessel equipped with cabins to accommodate passengers). ferry which can cross the channel in 1 hour and 50 minutes. Delivery of the ship was taken on the 30th of September 2005 and the ship made her maiden voyage on the 9th of November 2005.

The ship has been designed so as freight and cars are on separate decks which greatly reduces the loading-unloading times. The ships accommodation for its passengers and freight drivers is based over two decks which have been fitted out with full modern equipped restaurants, Bars, shop and cinema. There are seven lifts for carrying passengers, crew and stores from the lower car and freight decks up to the passenger and crew decks. The crew deck is equipped with cabins, dayroom, offices, laundry, stores and crew mess and is of limits to passengers and freight drivers. The ships bridge is a state of the art design with covered and overhanging bridge wings placed on the forward part of deck 9 and has 360 degree views. The bridge has the capacity to be operated by one man.

There are two decks for passengers and freight drivers, decks six and seven. On deck six you will find a Reception desk for information and a Bureau de Change. There is also a shop, child’s play area, video lounge and gaming machines. There are also two restaurants and a bar but the one outstanding features of the ship are the large panoramic windows at the front and the side with there uninterrupted sea views. Deck seven is mainly made up of the freight driver’s restaurant and rest areas but there are also facilities for other passengers. Outside there are two levels of promenade which can be accessed from deck six and deck seven. The lower promenade is mainly covered and is the only place were smoking is allowed. Both promenades are at the rear of the ship.

The M/F Maersk Dunkerque also has two sister ships that also operate on the same service and they are the M/F Maersk Delft, and the M/F Maersk Dover
