In June of 2005, Major League Baseball announced the formation of the World Baseball Classic, a 16 nation international competition to be held in March of 2006 for the first time. "The Classic" may have been formed in response to the IOC's removal of baseball as an olympic event, starting with the 2012 London Games.

On February 13, 2006, the Mexican Baseball Committee announced it's provisional 33 man roster, and reduced it down to just 30 players on March 2, 2006. The roster is mixed with youth and experience, but their strongest side seems to be their pitching crew. All teams participating in the tournament need to have at least three catchers and thirteen pitchers.
