Metzengerstein

"Metzengerstein" is one of the earliest short stories by American writer and poet Edgar Allan Poe. It was first published in the pages of the Saturday Courier magazine, in 1832.

The story takes place in Hungary, between two rival families: the Metzengersteins and the Berlifitzings. No one can fathom the age of this long, bitter enmity. The narrator states that its origin appears to rely on an old prophecy: "A lofty name shall have a fearful fall when, as the rider over his horse, the mortality of Metzengerstein shall triumph over the immortality of Berlifitzing."
Young Frederick, Baron of Metzengerstein, exhibits a particularly cruel behavior towards the Berlifitzing lord, to the point of setting his stables on fire and killing him. Later the same day, the vile pyromaniac is watching an old tapestry depicting a Metzengerstein who kills a Berlifitzing who lies at the feet of his horse. Then, to his horror, he witnesses a magical transformation of the horse in the image, which now resembles an infernal creature. A few minutes later, he's told that a new, remarkable horse has appeared in his own stables. The tapestry disappears.
Only the baron is able to break in the mysterious horse. Day after day, Metzengerstein rides it as if he was becoming addicted. During a nocturnal ride, the Metzengerstein castle catches fire. The runaway horse, against the horseman's orders, jumps into the flames. The vassals see it coming out of the fire, safe and sound. But the horseman has been left behind, burnt to death.

"Metzengerstein" is remarkably close to a posterior, more famous short story by Poe: "The Black Cat".
Depending on the interpretation, the main theme in "Metzengerstein" may be either vengeance or punishment, both administered via fantastic agents. It is clear to any reader that the Baron is condemned for his cruelty. One could think that he is being punished by some kind of universal Justice, with a capital jay, personified --well, animalified-- in a horse. Just as the black cat in the 1843 story. However, some details in the text draw this punishment to a less objective terrain, making it look more like a personal vengeance of the rival family. The old prophecy about the fall of the Metzengersteins points in that direction, as well as a brief reference to Metempsychosis in the first paragraph.
