Metrolink Antelope Valley Line
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Antelope Valley Line is a commuter rail line that serves the Northern Los Angeles County areas. The line is presently more rural in character because it travels through the sparsely populated Soledad Canyon between Santa Clarita and Palmdale. The Antelope Valley Line began service in 1992, called the Santa Clarita Line at that time, opening with the Ventura County and San Bernardino lines. It was one of Metrolink's first three lines.
The route initially ran from Union Station in Downtown Los Angeles to Santa Clarita. The line was extended into Lancaster in 1994 due to the destruction of the Antelope Valley Freeway's interchange with the Golden State Freeway (Interstate 5) by the Northridge Earthquake. Since Palmdale and Lancaster are "commuter cities", this posed a problem for local residents as the Antelope Valley Freeway is their principal route to Los Angeles. In the very week before the earthquake, the MTA stated that it would be at least 10 to 15 years before Metrolink trains could possibly ever be able to run to the Palmdale area. It was running to Lancaster 2 days after the quake.
In 1997 the Antelope Valley line began operating on Saturdays.
The Antelope Valley line operates Monday to Saturday with 24 trains operating on the weekdays and 8 trains on Saturdays as of July 2004.
