The following is a list of the top 16 metro systems in terms of passenger rides per year in the world:

- The figure is derived from ridership of two operators in Tokyo: Tokyo Metro Corporation 2.077 billion (Apr 2004-Mar 2005) [11] ; TOEI Subway 738 million (Jul 2003-Jun 2004) [12], thus passengers, transferred from one system to another are counted twice.
- The figure is derived from ridership of two operators in Seoul: Seoul Metro 873,192,785(Jan 2005 ~ Dec 2005)[13](in Korean), and SMRT 592,579,725(Jan 2005 ~ Dec 2005)[14](in Korean). This figure is only gate-passing numbers, so it is amount of pure-riding on the system. And passengers from station of KORAIL is excluded. If passenger`s figure by KORAIL in Seoul(not metropolitan area) were included, The figure is 1,808,994,125 at 2005. [15](in Korean) Beside, if the transferred from one line to another were counted twice, total passengers on this system(oparated by Seoul Metro & SMRT) at 2005 are 2.264 billion(cf. [16][in korean] or [17]).
- MTR Airport Express is excluded.
