The Metro de Santo Domingo was proposed during the summer of 2004 to president Hipólito Mejía, by the Brazilian president Lula da Silva, but it was the actual president Leonel Fernández who started the construction of the first subway system in the Dominican Republic, although he had affirmed he would not construct it.

This subway system will have one line, eleven stations, and about ten kilometers, which will bring a relieve to the actual public transport system of Santo Domingo, capital city of the Dominican Republic.

The project has been greatly criticized by the Dominican people, since thanks to the construction, important areas such as education and health are being neglected by the government.

According to the official version, the Metro de Santo Domingo will be open and entirely functional for 2008.
