Meteghan, Nova Scotia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meteghan is a small Canadian rural community located on the southwest coast of Nova Scotia near Yarmouth.

Meteghan draws its name from the Indian term "Mitihikan" meaning blue rocks, was founded in 1785 by Prudent Robichaud, Joseph LeBlanc, and other Acadian families. Today Meteghan is the largest village in Clare, Nova Scotia.

Meteghan is also the French Shore's busiest port with draggers, trawlers, seiners, and cod and lobster boats docking there. The fishing industry has long been the main source of income in Meteghan. Clare's shipbuilding industry began in Meteghan in 1890 with the construction of the first dry dock built in conjunction with a shipyard. The largest remaining shipyard is the A.F. Theriault & Sons Shipyard in Meteghan River.
