Please De-Christianize this Article
The language structure and conceptual framework of this article reflects Christianity, much more than it does Messianic Judaism. The theology section is CHRISTIAN theology, NOT Messianic JEWISH theology. In fact theology and eschatology, are entirely Christian focuses. 12.218.150.29 04:57, 1 August 2006 (UTC)

Also after much talk and debate/intense discussion over this article (see this page and corresponding archives for this article) this is as Messianic as we can get it, hon. The article must come from a NPOV and the article is for the most part to cite its sources. And *sigh* there’s a guideline for all of that. Not every person that has a website is considered a viable source. Also, what you’ve LEARNED is not a viable source, either. As for the theology section – please point out what it is you consider being Christian theology, is it because they call the Messiah “Jesus” in the article? This needs to be put back under Xianity. Messianic "Judaism" is Christian Theology with Jewish rituals in order to sucker uneducated Jews into a belief in Mashiakh. All sects of Judaism agree that Messianics are not cnosidered Jews. They believe in the Trinity, Divinity of Messiah, and the New Testament. They are Christian through and through, only outwardly do they profess Jewish rituals.User:JewEyefortheGentileGuy
- Yes the article sounds like warmed-over Christianity--something Messianic Judaism is not. The article should not reflect an outside opinionated view. And, at the ODP there are listed 290 congregations with websites, so 280 is not accurate. There are probably at least 500 congregations as many do not have websites. Shalom. [1]

- Regardless of what MJ is or isn't theologically speaking, the article is bound to WP:NPOV, and therefore will not follow a strict MJ perspective. And I doubt there's many congregations of any religion in North America these days that don't have websites somewhere. If it exists, it has a website somewhere more than likely. I've seen websites for various congregations with only 20-some people that don't have a dedicated or even a regular location that have a website; it's pretty rare for there to not be one. Another New Editor!
Hello!
At the risk of stepping in to a controversial topic that appears to have had a few edit wars, but in the spirit of the "be bold" philosophy, I've taken the liberty of rewriting the lead section. I am relatively new to WikiPedia, but I have tried to write it in a encyclopedic NPOV style. I hope you'll agree, and I'm sure you'll tell me what you think! Please be specific with any comments, especially those relating to POV matters.
There is definitely too much material in there, and some should be moved to the body of the article at a later stage. But much more work is needed to restructure and expand the whole article before this can be done. I felt it was more important at this stage to provide something that mentioned all the key points in a readable and NPOV fashion.
I have included all but one of the existing references (which was effectively a duplicate) and added a couple more. There is plenty of scope for additional or better ones.
For the rest of the article, I don't feel that the current starting point of identity is helpful. The reader needs to understand why issues of identity are important first. Moving the section on history to the start seems to be the best way to approach this. What do others think?
Would now be a good time for someone to archive this talk page?

Did you actually bother to read my changes before reverting them? I don't think that calling them "broadsweeping" is particularly accurate as (a) they only affected the lead section, and (b) the substance was largely unchanged and based on the original text. You didn't even put my username correctly in the log! It would have been polite for you to say if there was anything in my edit that you took exception to. Perhaps you could also register a username (as you've been asked to previously), and also sign your comments as recommended.
I am sorry if I was out of order by not discussing my ideas here first, although you'll note that I did ask about reordering some sections, which I considered to be a more substantial change. I'm keen to improve this article, by which I mean helping to make it comprehensive, well-written, accurate, and NPOV (none of which are currently true). But I'm not going to waste time if my contributions aren't welcome. Please could some other people offer their opinions both generally and on my edit. Sidefall 19:00, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Sidefall, apparently someone has reverted what you wrote back to the previous version. While I feel that there could be a mixing of the two (because I think your line should come first and then, the quote from whatever Messianic Institution that is already there), I DO NOT feel that anyone should cause this to start any "edit war". To the anonymous person who said he made a broadsweeping change -- it would be appreciated by all if you would either sign your name to your comments, or register a screenname -- whichever you need to do. It is unfair for you to comment or revert anything from some secret hiding place from which no one can touch you.

- I'm not sure what you mean by "quote from messianic institution that is already there". There is a copy of the UMJC definition in the source, but it is commented out so doesn't appear on the page. The UMJC definition is obviously relevant to this page but shouldn't appear in the lead section on NPOV grounds. It only represents one POV and there has been some opposition to it which should also be reported.

Sidefall -- sorry I didn't realize that quote was just a comment. Didn't catch that. That being said, I don't see any problem with you posting what you originally wrote. Much good, some not so good here...
I had to go away for a few months. I'm glad that the counter-missionaries no longer own the page. Thanks a lot to the editors who have brought this page into a more NPOV state. Having said this, there are some issues that might need to be addressed.
The first thing I note is that [Hebrew Christianity] has been redirected here. This makes about as much sense to me as redirecting Ireland to North Ireland. I'm not sure why, but the history section has been dramatically cut down, and in doing so has essentially eliminated the historic developments in the separation of Messianic Judaism from Hebrew Christianity.
I'm not certain if there is a relationship to these changes or not, but the overall tone of the article is now very Christian. There were some real howlers, which I've corrected. (A bimah is never referred to as a pulpit, and most of Judaism considers writing out any version of the tetragrammaton in this context to be near blasphemy.) These kind of slipups are not to be taken lightly. We do the antimissionaries' work for them if we come of as a bunch of Christians playing at Judaism.
The section on theology, is extremely Christian in its form and tone, especially the subsections on doctrines. The very term escatology is a Christian term, and its is presented as if there has been some great conference to decide them matter. I pretty much agree with what is presented, but I strenuously object to its being presented as definitive Messianic theology.
The section on holidays is weird at best. Why not state, "As a self-identified branch of Judaism, Messianic Judaism observes traditional Jewish Holidays, while some individuals continue to celebrate Christmas and/or Easter for various reasons, including family harmony."?
The entry on kashrut is self-contradictory.

If you could clean up the character references for the Hebrew that would be great. All other changes you made to the article were good updates in my opinion. You are correct in that this article has a Christian view - meaning that it uses Christian terminology like "eschatology" - but neither do I think that we should throw out the baby with the bathwater and not use the title at all until a better one can be found. There are no Messianic Jewish equivalents for eschatology, but I was thinking prior to your post that "End Times Theology" might work better.
If you mean that the article is "Christian" in its theology rather than its use of terms, I'd love to hear how and what you define as Christian, as opposed to Messianic Judaism.
Also, when I redrafted the article, I didn't move as much as I wanted to over from the previous version's History section. I have left this for other editors to do as I myself am still studying the history of Messianic Judaism and I do not feel confident enough to appropriately expand the section using cited resources just yet - as I am still collecting sources.
As for your holiday intro suggestion, I believe that the way the article is current subsectioned is the best way to present what is currently stated - even for the Holiday section. It allows room for growth if need be, and it provides the basis for any subsections regarding disagreements. The goal of the re-write was to present a format that could be expanded to handle all the competing POVs related to the article, and not be locked due to edit wars.
I didn't know that Hebrew Christian redirected to Messianic Judaism. For now, I think that's ok, at least until we get enough material to start creating additional Messianic Jewish pages and thus create a portal to link them all together. I am sure there is someone from J4J who would love to expound on an article for Hebrew Christians. For now, I think the subsection about this in the Identity section is sufficient - and perhaps that is why that article is redirected here.
The goal is to expand the sections with information to the point that they can be moved to their own pages, and a Messianic Jewish portal created. I would love to see that happen - as I am sure other Messianic editors would enjoy seeing that happen too.

It's good to be back...
When I say "form and tone", I mean "form and tone". I don't know how many mainstream Jewish sites you've visited, but I've NEVER seen anything like the doctrinal statements which are here. I HAVE seen almost identical copy from almost every Christian denomination that I've contacted. Christian creedalism is one of the things that distinguishes it from Judaism. (And I can pull multiple scholarly references on this if needed.) If that weren't enough, the subsection label "Non-essential Doctrines" has a distinctly Evangelic tone.
I've been trying to figure out how to address the issue, which must be here. Here's the problem: we are an emergent NMR. As such, even if we wanted to hammer out our ninety-five points of argument with Christian denomination X, there is no extant or even possible forum in which to agree on such points, nor would we agree with each other if such a forum were available. As much as I dislike the fact, there is an effectively unbroken continuum from Hebrew Roots Christianity, through Hebrew Christianity, to Messianic Judaism. And congregations can and have moved back and forth across whatever divide one might wish to draw. To present otherwise is to violate NPOV. Worse, (from my POV) it seems that almost no one self-identifies as Hebrew Christian without being pushed. I attempted to research the links at the bottom of the page back around March, and it was striking how many referred to themselves as "Messianic" on their sites, but when queries if they thought of themselves as being part of Judaism, they came back "no". A scholar might well conclude that "Hebrew Christian" is a term coined by people wishing to confine the term "Messianic Judaism" to be consistent with its syntactic meaning. It seems possible, even likely, that the term "Messianic" (by itself) will come to mean what I want "Hebrew Christian" to mean.
My point? Theology and doctrine must be presented as a continuum. Spurious doctrines which have/are being attached (ie: Sacred Name & Ephramite) by some must be admitted. While the Evangelic/Torah Pole sections on earlier versions of the page had its problems, it at least had the potential of presenting this unfortunate fact. I may take a swipe at reworking this section. In the meantime, please take a look at Rashi's Thirteen Principles of Faith (page 179 in the Artscroll Siddur), and the first part of Sanhedrin 11. That's about as formal as Judaism generally gets.

In the theology section, I don't see there being a disagreement in Messianic Juadaism on the essentials of agreement of which would be seen as the absolute essential salvific doctrines of MJism that all MJs would agree on - the key phrase being "all MJs". There might be disagreement between different MJs over what is essential for salvation in addition to these (like keeping Torah), but the list presented is what all MJs do agree on as being essential for securing a place in the world to come. Granted there is no forum to decide these salvific essentials, but does their have to be for the assumption to be correct - after all we have the Scriptures! We know there are agreeable essentials of our faith, as there are other groups that deny the divinity of Yeshua, and some groups who have other Messiahs; but MJism is not these groups. These other groups and doctrines aren't the majority, nor even a growing minority in MJism. So then, the non-essentials of agreement are also listed but not all self-described MJs subscribe to those views. The Christians have sources for gathering their statements of faith - and all of our sources are theirs too. Isn't MJism defined apart from other sects of Judaism by the creeds of the Apostles, and later by their testimonies and letters? For the uninitiated, we are Christian by faith (as in saved from the eternal concequence of sin, and secured in a place in the world to come, by faith in the atoning death and resurrection of Yeshua the Messiah), but we are Jewish in practice, because our faith is Jewish - from Abraham to now. Do we then remove the dichotomy by compromising our faith and not say all that we believe in response to the Christians and Jews that seek to quiet us? Hear me out here: our work as believers in MJism is one of apologetics to three groups: Christians, Jews, and the rest of the world. An encyclopedia page on MJism should be the forum where the world can pick out our main points, where Jews can see where we differ with them, and where Christians can see where we are seperated from them.
For the world audience, this article summarizes a lot. For the Jewish audience, we use our Hebrew terms and concepts as much as possible to explain our positions. For the Christian audience, we engage them in their most familiar format: statements of faith - just like Rashi.
Now that I've said this, I would love to see your proposed changes. :)

Well, if by "essential doctrines", you mean "those doctrines which must be accepted for salvation", then you have a substantial logical problem, as faith alone (of the proper sort) leads to salvation, not adherance to a set of creeds. (Credenda Adgenda did a wonderful view of driving this point home recently.)
Moreover, I can pick substantially at almost all of these statements as being univerally held within MJism--especially if I were to insist that they mean the same things here as they do in evangelic Christianity. The process of salvation and santification described in items 5 & 6 is one that I cannot state that I have ever heard before. Some in MJism hold a view which is almost modalism. Others hold that the trinity is too confining, preferring the Etz Chaim model from Kaballah. I've heard the Apostolic writings denigrated to being scarcely above Talmud, which in turn is taken far more seriously (by some) than anything on this page would suggest. You might want to contrast and compare this statement on Messiah with the one that was adopted (after two days of careful debate) by the UMJC conference a few years back.
But these particulars are not my primary issue. My primary issue is that this section is saying, by its mere construction and tone, that MJism is Christianity with a twist. The details probably align precisily with a particular denomination. I am concerned that Christians don't decide that we are lost and in need of a home missions effort. But I'm not willing to dress up as a Christian to that end, in part because I take seriously Paul's implicit charge to stir up the jealousy of the Jews.
Messianic Judaism exists in opposition to Christianity on a number of key points. These differences, and the continuum on which they are held, should frame this discussion. If a reasonable man can scan signficant parts of this article and come away with the veiw that we are a bunch of wannabees, then there is no need for the antimissionaries to mess with us. We have done their work for them.
And I'll see if I can get a start of a straw man together on my talk page tonight. ;)

Christian Views of Messianic Judaism
The section on Christian views of MJ needs serious revision. As it stands, it is eaisly a MJ POV critique of Christianity rather than a NPOV discussion of how Christians view Messianic Judaism, both positive and negative.
- To anon - I see what the issue is and agree that it is POV. (It's really one sentence that makes it that way)
- I plan to change it as soon as I get a moment; however, please feel free to change it yourself, if you would like to.

Theology: Essential Doctinres and Non Essential Doctrines
I was wondering if we as an editing team could review for NPOV purposes, the list I posted in the subsections Essential Doctrines and Non Essential Doctrines in regards to the beliefs held by the vast majority of those who consider themselves Messianic. There are a lot of beliefs in Messianic Judaism, and the beliefs vary from congregation to congregation, even in the same city, even on the same block. However, I believe it is necessary to the encyclopedic nature of the article to list what the vast majority of Messianics do believe, and also list all other beliefs that the vast majority do not agree on. That was the purpose for the Essential (to salvation/being a Messianic) Doctrines and the Non Essential (to salvation/being a Messianic) Doctrines subsections I created. I felt it was necessary to create them, using a list from several sources (my and other congregations, Messianic Manifesto, and even older versions of this article and their sources). I feel that it would be in the public's best interests for us to work on this list. Perhaps a change in the name of the sections to "Popular Beliefs" and "Not So Popular Beliefs", or "Agreeables" and "Non Agreeables", or "Messianic Essential Beliefs" and "Messianic Non Essential Beliefs" etc. I hope I'm making sense as to my desire for something to this effect. Perhaps if we can come up with subsection headings and agree on the titles, that the content within those subsections will be easy to formulate, based on various sources. So far, I do like "Essential Doctrines" and "Non Essential Doctrines" (KISS principle) and then an explanation within the subsection and what it covers: the beliefs that a majority of Messianics adhere to, and the beliefs that are not as agreeable to the majority. I am also open to the idea that we don't fuss with what is held by the majority of minority in regards to these doctrines, in favor of just a subsection simply titled "Doctrines" with a whole list there (if the doctrine doesn't have a subsection elsewhere in the article, or have its own article, then it would get listed in "Doctrines" if there was a verifiable source for the belief).inigmatus 22:15, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
- The problem is that what you list as essential and non essential beliefs, represents not Messianic Judaism as a whole, but only the majority American-assimilated branch of Messianic Judaism (This would be like saying that Judaism doesn't believe in a literal Messiah, just because the majority of liberal Reform synagogues in America don't.) For example you list the pagen-christian trinity doctrine in the essentials; whereas Torah observant Messianic Jews reject such a notion. And conversly You list Torah observance and non-essential; but that same segment would claim that torah observance is a at the core of the jewish identity and the teachings of Yeshua, and anyone saying otherwiise would be "least in the kingdom" 12.218.150.29 19:58, 27 August 2006 (UTC)
I think it would be very hard to encompass all the beliefs of the multitude of Messianic Believers worldwide. I will say that I, as a Torah-Observant Messianic Believer, thought *I* was the majority until I read the wikipedia article lol. That being said – I know many different sets of Messianic Believers. All of those sets are “Torah-Observant”, at least to the best of their interpretation of the word. No Messianic Believer I know celebrates Christmas or Easter; all MJs I know observe the feasts and the dietary laws. MJs I know don’t accept the trinity in the way Christians believe it. I agree with 12.218’s last line, that to us Torah observance is at the core of the teachings of Yeshua. I do not know of one Messianic Believer that feels otherwise. I think for us the things that are often seen in different lights are the faith the sets put in rabbinical laws, and thoughts on what the Tanakh and B’rit Chadashah say in regards to clothing (Kippah or no Kippah? Major Adherents of Messianic Judaism
I know the article List of Messianic Jews and Hebrew Christians already exists, and I don't like to see the duplication of effort. Having said that, after reading and editing the article I can't help but come away with the feeling that this article could use a section specific persons (preferably historical as well as modern persons) who where ethnically Jews, but belived in Yeshua (Jesus): such persons could justifibly be included (regardless of the actual lable they bore in their day). I'm sure His own talmudim (disciples) would make the list, as well as Saul (Paul); some people from the Hashalah (Jewish Enlightenment) period in Europe; and modern-era followers. Between Biblical periods and the Haskalah I'm drawing a (rather lengthy) blank. Dose anyone else here think that a concise, but well rounded section covering notable adherents of Messianic Judaism (and linking to the list for more complete treatment) would be good for the article? Any ideas where the section would start and end? And for my own personal curiosity sake: can anyone think of a Jewish followers of Jesus from the Middle Ages? —Wikijeff

At this time, I would much prefer that the matter not be raised, as there is almost no way to create such a list without appearing to be Christian triumphalists. I know, I know. It's normally minorities that try to point out "See all these names you know that are like us". But a Jew who converts to Christianity is 1) going from a small religion to a large one and 2) doing something I don't want. A list of major Jews who accept Yeshua as the messiah and continue to worship the God of their fathers as did their fathers--now that is a list that I might like to see linked. Starting with Yacob ha Tzadik (ie: James the Just), of course, followed by Paul/Shaul "I have not walked in a disorderly fashion." of Tarsus, and the Shaliach John, who taught his Greek disciple (Polycarp?) to celebrate Pesach.

Unsigned, if Christians are defined as those who worship God using pagan holidays like the Winter Solstice (Christmas) and Easter, then no, Messianics are not Christians. Just an FYI. You will find many Messianics object to the use of the term "Christian" for many reasons, but these are the most important. Personally I don't see why we should confuse the world who don't even know the difference between a Catholic and a Baptist; but I know other Messianics would disagree with me and do everything they can to promote the term "Messianic" - a term that I use often until I have to clarify it. inigmatus 17:43, 2 September 2006 (UTC)

Objections Sections
the "Jewish objections" and "Christian objections" sections in the article may be factual and possibly NPOV, however they are inconsistent with standard wikipedia style and practice. If you look throughout Wikipedia it is not common practice to voice the objections to a subject in an article about that subject (you don't find any objections sections in the article about Chabad, even though many other Chasidim consider them a cult.) You're coming in mighty strong about what is really a minor issue. Yes, there is another way of handling the matter--it would probably be better to merely list the distinctives, but you will get an edit war if you try.
We are a NRM, flying in the face of 1850 years of tradition of the largest faith and of the most persecuted faith. Our article is not going to be as pretty as those of more accepted movements until we gain their level of acceptance. May it be soon and in our days.

12.218..., I doubt by formatting the article to include objections would pave the way to allow any trivial objection to be posted - as most of those that are uncited would be disputed here in Talk. I just don't see it happening. If a lot of objections were noted, then obviously we the editors would summarize them and point the reader to a more detailed article - for then there would be reason to create a new article entirely, and not clutter up this one. This article is organic. My intention was for it to grow and for individual parts to eventually replicate into full articles by themselves so a Messianic Judaism portal could be justified. Someone had to start somewhere, and you have to admit that the way this article is formatted is much better than any other that was attempted. If you have ideas or information you'd like to contribute we'd love to see it. Shalom in the Name of Yeshua! The problem here is terminology and lack of understanding. First of all, the true Name of Jesus is Yeshua, which means Salvation. Jesus is the English version of the Greek Name "Isos". The Greeks called Him "Isos Christos" which meant Jesus the Anointed One. Christ is the English versionof Christos, which means Anointed or anointed one. Messianic comes from the word Messiah.
There could not be a "Christian" without Yeshua, who lived in a Jewish body created by the Holy Spirit and the cooperation of Miriam (Mary, a Jewish Virgin). Yeshua is a Jew. He will return to Jerusalem, Israel. He is NOT a Christian and never will be a Christian. Christians are a sect that was formed as they were the first Believers. Actually, they were Believers in the Messiah, who was the Anointed One. The name Christian was formed from the word Christos. It is the English version of Christos. It is all about Yeshua (Salvation) called Jesus in English. He loves both the Jew, Gentile, Buddhist, Muslim etc. He is the Son of the Living God, therefore He is God on His Father's side and human on His mother's. His physical body is human,Jewish and called Yeshua. His Spirit Body is called Christos, the Anointing, Powerfilled. The difference with some Christians is that since Judaism is an Exclusive religion, way of life, and the sect of Christianity is an Inclusive religion, way of life, the Christians, who accepted Yeshua (Jesus) could not receive the proper instruction about Him. They had limited knowlege before the computer and television. So, because of this, there is lack of understanding of terminology, culture, traditions, and customs. Most Americans were never taught their native language; only English, while the people from the other countries came to the US and spoke their mother mother language as well as English. They were basically ignorant people with Great Faith, which moves God. So. from ths time on, don't fret or make chaos over trivial things. Each religion (way of life) will lead to Yeshua eventually. Law, Grace, and the flow of this Article
The sections (4.1) Law vs. Grace and (4.2) Law and Grace are both one-liners. It seems to me they could be merged into a single section "Competing views of the Torah", (or whatever) with transitional text between the various view-points. I think that, with some additional content, would improve the flow of the article in that section. On a similar note, are their not adherents to Messianic Judaism who (a) do not observe Torah, but (b) do not hold the Torah in conflict with God's mercy and grace toward men? WikiJeff -- They are one liners. They are pretty much stubs that need to be expounded on. Feel free to do that, or to make a suggestion of how to add on to the sections. As for the non-Torah Observant Messianic Believer -- speaking for myself, I don't know any Messianics like that, and have never read any literature from such people. I don't think anyone will have an issue with you even renaming the section if you'd like (if anyone does, please say so). Just remember that, if possible, to cite your references. Hard article to make NPOV
I've only spent about an hour looking into this, after bumping into a reference to 'Jews for Jesus'. It seems very simple to me. I would define it as 'Messianic Judaism' as an approach to converting Jews to Christianity by offering them an alternative religion that is at it's core Christian but keeps some trappings of Judaism. A relatively small number of converted Messianic Jews are supported by a much larger number of evangelical Christians seeking to convert Jews. Critics accuse the movement of hypocricy, their main arguments being that that the majority of people supporting the movement identify themselves as Christians, that it is funded by and closely shares most of its membership with Christian organisations who's stated goal is to convert Jews to Christianity, and that Messianic Jewish organisations mislead prospective converts by concealing these connections.
Anyway, good luck to you all in trying to find an NPOV solution to what seems to me, in my humble opinion, an attempt by very ferverent Christians to be dishonest to save souls. If you can fix that, maybe you can take a stab at the 'terrorist versus freedom fighter', 'torture versus fighting terrorism' and 'pro-life versus pro-choice'. :)

In more detail: 1) the messianic Jewish sites I looked at were concerned with converting jews 2) I tracked them down through some what website links to what and who is a member of what and what I found was funding from Christian organizations support from Christians and evangelical organizations who state they want to convert Jews 3) i found plenty of criticism that i paraphrased above, it seemed supported 4) i took a look at the claims of persecution and 100,000's membership and both seemed dishonest. 5) my personal opinion, a more accurate name would be Christians for the Old Testament. Jesus is the crux of your belief, but you downplay him in your public face. From what I read, the claim that you are being dishonest to convert mainstream Jews has merit. Because there is various POVs and opinions among our Messianic faith as well (which the article does seem to cover rather well and SHOULD cover)... Renovations
Today I have reworded various parts of this page to make it more coherant with what Messianic Judaism actually is in my comprehensive studies: the practice of Judaism that also happens to believe Jesus is Messiah, which Messianic Judaism actually is, rather than the practice of Christianity in Judaism's clothing, which it is not. I have done so in a non-biased way that actually has some balance between the two opposing views, IMO. Perhaps this brings the page ultimately closer to having a comfortable level of NPOV. Other forms of Messianic Judaism
I don't know if it's been discussed in the talk archives, but surely 'Messianic Judaism' encompasses more than just Jews who believe in Jesus? Maybe I'm widely off the mark, but I think that the term 'MJ' includes all branches of Judaism who feel that the messiah has already come, including the followers of Sabbatai Zevi, David Reubeni and Jacob Joseph Frank (only one of whom, Frank, believed in Jesus). Factual Accuracy Debated?
I noticed on the main page it says the factual accuracy is debated. What's debated!? I've read a lot of this talk page...and it's as if the WHOLE IDEA is debated! I'm finding this talk page to be a confusing mish-mash of theological whatchamacallit and noise that really doesn't have much to do with ANYTHING that is Messianic Judaism. If you guys REALLY wanna know what Messianic Judaism, then please please please, go read/listen to Eddie Chumney, Joel Chernoff, Monte Judah, Ralph Messer, Bill Cloud, Brad Scott and a whole slew of others I'm not gonna mention of the top of my head. Many of them have books, cds, pamphlets etc. that could EASILY be referenced so that people quit questioning this whole thing. Also, while I'm at it, I think the numbers that were mentioned in the first paragraph (47,000) are low...REALLY low. Why Messianic Judaism is actual Judaism
Messianic Judaism is Judaism, not some anomoly within Christianity. From the Frequently Asked Questions:
Messianic Judaism is not gentile Christianity in disguise.
* Messianic Jews observe traditional Jewish holidays such as Purim, Chanukah, etc. Christians do not.
* Messianic Jews observe the biblical feasts such as the Feasts of Trumpets, Tabernacles and Passover. Christians do not.
* Messianic Jews do not observe Christian holidays borrowed from paganism, such as Christmas and Lent.
* Messianic Jews worship on the biblical sabbath, i.e., Friday evening till Saturday, not Sunday.

* Messianic Jews cant the Torah portion in Hebrew at worship services.

Messianic Jews do not need to be evangelized into Christianity -- they already believe in Yeshua (Jesus).
B'rit Chadasha (the New Testament) was written by Jews, not the Roman Catholic Church. Despite its claims to the contrary, Roman Catholicism did not even come into existence until around 325-400 C.E.
Contrary to common belief, there is no historical evidence that Luke was a non-Jewish Gentile. Either he was of Jewish ancestry or he was a proselyte Jew, i.e., a Gentile who converted to Judaism--Gentiles don't hang around with itinerant Jewish preachers--Jews do.
Most adult Messianic Jews converted from traditional Orthodox or Conservative Judaism into Protestantism (i.e., became Hebrew Christians) and then went back to Judaism, while retaining their belief that Yeshua is G-d's promised Messiah.
Like about half the Protestant denominations, Messianic Jews only baptize believers and only by immersion; Messianic Jews do not baptize infants or baptize by pouring or sprinkling.
Not everyone who considers himself a "Messianic Jew" is.
For instance, for over a year I regularly attended Zola Levitt's Shalom Shalom Congregation in Dallas, Texas. He is ethnically Jewish, he was raised Orthodox Jewish, and he definitely considers himself to be Messianic. However, theologically his beliefs are mainstream Baptist. Hence, he really is a Hebrew Christian, not a Messianic Jew. (He is an ordained Baptist minister.) Almost all the attendees are gentile Protestants. All the staff ministers except Zola are gentiles and all were trained in mainstream Protestant seminaries.
In shorthand, saying that Messianic Judaism (A Hebrew-centric, Torah-based spirituality that has a majority of ethnically Jewish practitioners) is some fringe of Christianity is like saying that Kaballists are not practicing Judaism because they adhere to both Torah and Kaballah, or that Karaites are non-Judaism because they reject Talmud: Who are you kidding?
Christian objections section
The content of that section was laughable. Unless MJ presents themselves as true keepers of the covenant (vs. real Judaism), it looked more like Christian support, not objections:
- Christian objections to Messianic Judaism are many and often start with disputes over applications of Torah in a believer's life.
- The majority of Christians believe that, with the coming of Jesus of Nazareth, the Law of Moses was made obsolete, see Antinomianism, Christian view of the Law.
- Some Christians believe persons observing Torah do not have faith in the Messiah and are forsaking the gift of grace and mercy that God gave to all people, after the Messiah's death and subsequent resurrection.
- There are some Christian denominations that have what many would consider to be an anti-Semitic view of Messianic Believers because of their attempted alignment with Judaism.

- Messianic Judaism is not a Christian "weapon", considering that Messianic Judaism has the same basic principals of faith and Torah practice as the Conservative-Reform gamut, with the major addition that they have believe Jesus is the Davidic Messiah, and consider what sort of meaning that brings. Now, that doesn't mean that the majority of Christians don't like the movement, perhaps that is what you meant to say.

The Talk page of Messianic Judaism is to discuss valid changes or edits needed for the article. The article is ABOUT Messianic Judaism, period. It is not about your views or someone else's views of Messianic Judaism, it is about the article. Unless ANY of you have something constructive to do here, it would be good for those that truly work on the article and its contents if you would take your view-hashing elsewhere. We've all heard it before, both sides (since it only ever seems to be MJs versus Jews on here). The article was locked for a month because of nonsense such as this and I'd rather that not happen again. Repeat: Your banter is not useful here, whether it is for or against Messianic Judaism. - What red line? The majority of Messianic Judaism is not only Torah-observant, but treats the Talmud pretty seriously (unlike the bare-bones Karaite tradition). Messianic Jews don't agree with everything Mainomedes or the Medieval Rabbis wrote, but that certainly doesn't make it non-Judaism because:

1. Those rabbis were constantly under the seige of anti-semetism, which they at least subconsciously equated with the idea of Jesus as Messiah itself, thus not giving the idea appropriate gravity.
2. Most of Jesus' disciples were either Pharisees, Saducees, or Essenes. There is ample evidence to show that Jesus himself was an active Pharisee, though I tend to believe he had one foot in each camp.
3. Most Reform and Reconstructionist Judaism doesn't look at the Oral Traditions as even possible halakha, aside from the fact that many of their beliefs actively contradict it. Though they do this, they are certainly still branches of Judaism, as Messianic Judaism is.

- The problem with Messianic Judaism being considered legitimately Jewish is the insertion of non-Jewish texts (ie the Gospels and Paul's epistles) into canon. While it is true that all discourse on Torah is legitimate Jewish canon, the Christian scriptures are not discourses on Torah, they are a seperate and irrelevant set of texts that portray a significantly anti-Jewish perspective. Reform, Reconstructionist and Karaite Judaism removed the Oral Law from the canon, but they didn't add anything either except their own aggadah, which while not halakhic is still Torah-derived. Jesus's mashiachship or lack thereof is irrelevant to the discussion. A religion's canon is its heart and soul and Messianic Judaism uses Christian canon rather than Jewish canon and therefore cannot be considered Judaism. It does not matter whether or not Messianic Judaism is considered legitimately Jewish. It is what they (i.e., we, since I am MJ too) call themselves and so that is who the article is about. If the article were to call them Hebrew Christians or pseudo-Christians or whatever definition you think they more properly fit, then the article would no longer be about the people in question. No one's personal beliefs (and I keep saying this) matters. The article needs to be NPOV, it needs to be factual in the beliefs of the people and their traditions. That is what matters here. Which is why I say all this constant bickering back and forth about what they believe, what he believes, what you believe, what I believe nonsense isn't helping the ARTICLE. I took another crack at trying to understand this. It seems a big issue that isn't fully developed in the article are the evangelical aspect of many (most?) Messianic Judaic organisations. This seems to be the biggest source of friction between Messianic Jews and Mainstream Jews. It appears at a few points in the article, but it maybe it should be given a section by itself? - Explain the very satirical portrayal of the Pharisees in the texts then. Both religious and secular scholarship has confirmed the obviousness that only one of the Gospels (Matthew) was actually written with Jews as its target audience.

Yes, they believe that Jesus is the Jewish Messiah, and no, they're not Christians because they have no sympathy with the beliefs that 1.) Jesus is G-d incarnate, hardly scriptural and 2.) that the Messiah replaces the Torah, which is 100% unscriptural. Also, I am not a fundamentalist, but a rationalist; though not really humanist since I fully affirm the existance of G-d, I believe that there is a rational (and generally utilitarian) conclusion for virtually every portion of the Scriptures, and that one can at least tap into many of these conclusions in this life if they truly wish to and study the texts from P'shat thru Sod level, in their contexts. I also know that it is IRRATIONAL to expect that some of the Brit Chadasha hasn't been at least mildly corrupted in the translation after 1800+ years of anti-semitism, post CE 70 diaspora.

Unless Jesus had prophetic abilities (which would require a Christian rather than a Jewish worldview), it doesn't make any sense for him to be able to quote a book that didn't exist yet. Your source's credibility seems to be falling apart.

This isn't a debate over whether or not Messianic Judaism is a legitimate religion or whether or not the one variously called Jesus, Yeshua, Christ, et al is the Jewish Messiah. That sort of discussion, according to WP:NOT doesn't belong anywhere on Wikipedia, even in the User_talk namespace. My opinion on that subject is something that I haven't even represented here. 'Hate' would absolutely not be the word I'd have for it, though. This is a discussion of whether or not Messianic Judaism is to be considered a form of Judaism or a form of Christianity for purposes of this article, Judaism, Christianity, Wikiproject Christianity, Wikiproject Judaism and Wikiproject Jewish History. It is, therefore, a highly relevant discussion. WP:NPOV is itself a point of view, the point of view that represents all relevant points of view as fairly and equally as is humanly possible. This article is the property of the wikipedia community, not of Messianic Jews or Jews in general and therefore must reflect the consensus of the entire wikipedia community. Consensus is that Messianic Judaism is a form of Christianity. Remember, Wikipedia is not a soapbox, a battleground, an anarchy or a democracy. - Rivka, I will oppose her, because she is wrong. I can't stand (or understand) the stupid, pathetic belief that majority is directly proportional to correctness. Because she repeatedly refuses to inspect the required reading concerning Messianic Judaism, it is apparent that it is not in her full interest to be educated in the subject. That's what should be governing the articles we write, not some vague concept of "concensus" from a editorbase that hardly knows subjects in depth in the first place. That is how "real" encyclopedias are written.

- First of all, the dates you provide are when the works were assembled, not written. Also, because the Messiah is the closest possible physical comparison to G-d (and human because mankind is made in His image), you would only expect the Messiah to be utterly engrained with the knowledge of Torah and the truth about G-d, past, present, and future. Also, how would it require a Christian worldview? It was said in the Talmud that after Malachi, the prophecy passed from Israel, but unlike Sacred Scriptures, the Talmud is merely commentary and advice, of entirely valuable but also entirely human authorship. I'm stating no unique idea, but the one most commonly held within Judaism (Conservative thru Reconstructionist). Perhaps "quoted" was not even the best term to use; "moral teachings 100% compatible with those in the Talmud" is probably more fitting. Many of his teachings were also extremely similar to those of Rabbi Hillel.

- This response practically made me laugh. The Messiah is many things, and one is a redeemer. According to Orthodoxy, one of the Messiah's roles is to REDEEM Israel and the Jews from the evil and suffering that has overcome them, into a glorious existance with HaShem. From the very earliest section of the Torah (temptation of Adam), it is made crystal-clear that mankind is in some redemptory need.

- There are hundreds if not thousands of rabbis in Messianic Judaism. Speaking of Shaul himself? He was a Pharisaic, Orthodox Rabbi. How do we know this? Let's start with the fact that he stated this in his own letters. Don't be a six-year-old about it. Simply stating that Messianic rabbis are not authentic Jewish rabbis is profoundly ignorant; they are no less educated in halacha, Torah, and the Oral Tradition than other rabbis.

- Christians and Muslims are given near-equal protection under Israeli law to Orthodox Jews in legal issues such as marriage. It is ultimately unjust and ironic that Masorti (Conservative), Reform, and Messianic Jews do not enjoy the same rights of recognition. According to the state of Israel, they don't exist. The Haredim have serious problems with Conservative, Reform, and Messianic Jews even going to the Western Wall to pray. This is beyond acts of violence: this is the story of 5-10% having more voice than 90-95%, with little dialogue as to why.

- All well understood, Kari. While I am here, one of my goals at Wikipedia is to fight for the verbal rights of Messianic Judaism to be represented as it actually is. I'm not sure just how well concencus is going to work for that (considering that RJs greatly outnumber MJs here, and most of the former have no interest in systematically examining B'rit Chadasha for validity, almost out of some strange feeling that pesky "other" Jewish Scripture will "corrupt" them). It is important to understand that Judaism by no means has to be completely Maimonidean (it wasn't for thousands of years!). Messianic Jews agree with most of his 13 principles and his rationalized way of looking at Judaism (in fact, the only truly major objection is the "I believe with perfect faith" that prefaces each stated principle, because noone truly believes with a perfect level of faith), but the man knew virtually nothing about Yeshua, though pretended to. When referring to him Maimonedes regularly made the statement "may his bones be ground to dust", quite violent and disturbing. He made sweeping and incorrect statements such as "Jesus taught against the Torah" and "His father was a gentile", and various other remarks without any shred of truth to them. Perhaps his eyes were blinded with tears from antisemetism, wrongly commited in the Messiah's name (actually, every problem RJs have with Yeshua seems to stem from what was wrongly done in his name, rather than any focus on his Jewish teachings). Christians are no more sympathetic to Messianic Judaism, because MJ carries the distinct and direct challenge that their faith (or at least, how they practice it) is completely wrong. One of the heroes of the cause is Michael Rood (http://www.michaelrood.com/about.htm and http://www.michaelrood.com/index.htm), who, if I am not mistaken, is an Orthodox Jewish proselyte by conversion.

wording of second sentence
Three options so far, would welcome other ideas:
"Like Christians, Messianic Jews believe Jesus to be the Messiah." "Like Christians and unlike other Jews, Messianic Jews believe Jesus to be the Messiah." "Like Christians and unlike other denominations who identify themselves as Jews, Messianic Jews believe Jesus to be the Messiah."

- 'Denomination' doesn't really apply as the differences between movements of Judaism are minute compared to the differences between different denominations of Christianity. Reform, Conservative, Orthodox or whatever, the Jewish religion is fairly cohesive in terms of basic theology. Messianic Judaism is a denomination of Christianity rather than a movement of Judaism. Moreover, there is another problem with this statement: You can't 'identify yourself as a Jew'. It doesn't matter what you identify yourself as; if you're not a Jew, you're not a Jew, that's all there is to it. I really don't see how this is WP:NPOV at all as it completely ignores the Jewish perspective, the Messianic perspective and probably also the Christian perspective too. I am not sure I should enter a debate, where actually articles of faith might have influenced some standpoints. However, I'll assume good faith (i.e., that all of you try very hard not to let your beliefs influence the formulations in this article), and proceed. Kari, you claimed that there is no question on who is a jew or who isn't; and in the history you referred to Who is a Jew. I don't understand. I followed the link, and it turned out that the article claims that jewishness is not well-defined, and proceeds to discuss the problems stemming from this (since e.g. the state of Israel needed procedures to decide whether a given person was a Jew, for legal purposes). Let me quote from the first paragraph of your reference: As Judaism shares some of the characteristics of an ethnicity and a religion, the definitions of a Jew may vary, depending on whether a religious, sociological, or ethnical approach to identity is used. Please reread the entire article you referred to; and if you still think that article supports the view that either you are a Jew or you aren't, then please explain how. - There is no question, in terms of Jewish law, if a person is a Jew even if he or she is practicing another religion. If I were to discover in my own family tree that my mother's mother's mother's mother's mother's mother happened to be Jewish, I would be a Jew, as would be my mother, and her mother, and her mother's mother, etc. even though we were all raised something else. You'll never hear any rabbinic source (from Orthodox to Reconstructionist) who will tell you differently. Where the question lies, which is the focus of the Who is a Jew article is whether or not people who are not matrilineally descended from a Jewish person are Jews. If you have a Jewish father but a Baptist mother, are you a Jew? Some will say yes, others will say no. If you have a Jewish grandfather on your dad's side, are you a Jew? I don't any rabbis will say yes, but it was still good enough for the Nazis to send you to the showers.
- The point I'm trying to make is that Messianic Jews are, indeed, Jews according to the halakhic definition, which is the most stringent and is included as a subgroup in every other definition of "Jew". Moreover, as Messianic Judaism is a form of Christianity rather than Judaism, defining it relative to the movements of Judaism rather than to Judaism at large gives it a semblance of legitimacy as a Jewish religion that it is not due. The Creation of a Messianic Judaism Portal (and whew, the article has survived so far!)
First I'm amazed. The article has actually survived. Sure the talk page has grown tremendously, as was to be expected, but I like how the new format is handling the issues of content now, more so than just handling issues only. (the prior version could only manage to do and often got locked up because of edit wars on the issues, rather than content). I encourage all editors to add their knowledge to the article, striving to keep it substantiated and referenced, so that one day we can submit this article for candidacy as a WP Featured Article.
On a second note, the article is beginning to bulge. Specifically the Theology section. I wish to begin the discussion of creating a seperate Messianic Judaism Theology article, by linking it to a new Messianic Judaism Portal to address the expansion of information within the realm of Messianic Judaism. A portal will be needed soon, and I invite fellow Messianics (and other editors who are not Messianic) to discuss if a portal at this point could be useful to expand the information about Messianic Judaism even further on Wikipedia. Use of "Yeshua" in this and related articles
I think it might be more appropriate to use "Jesus" rather than "Yeshua" this article as well as other articles. The reason I suggest this is that it's a name more people are familiar with. To the uninitiated reader, the question would be "Who the heck is Yeshua?" whereas if we used "Jesus" that question doesn't exist. Kari Hazzard (T | C) 12:14, 25 October 2006 (UTC)
Kari -- I think that if people want to know who Yeshua is, they can click on the name Yeshua and be directed to the page that is about Yeshua. Because there are some Messianic Jews (perhaps a small faction; I don't know) that do not see "Jesus" and "Yeshua" as the same person. They believe that the name Jesus is a name that means nothing and is a slight to who the Messiah is in the first place. The only places I can cite for you as proof on such thinking are websites and so they are not viable, really -- but the name Yeshua encompasses the beliefs of the majority of MJs, as well as the "radical" beliefs of the aforementioned groups. - I suggest the idea because, for example, the article on Moses is titled "Moses", not "Moshe" or "Moshe Rabbeinu". The article about Maimonides is titled thus, rather than "Rambam", "RaMBaM" or "Moshe ben Maimon". I think it may be a valid goal to make the article easier for the uninitiated to read by using the most commonly-used name of a given person (in this case, Jesus) wherever possible. I will throw in my vote for consensus that the MJ article should refer to Jesus as Yeshua because Yeshua is the name for Jesus in the vast majority of Messianic circles, and it is fitting to use the name especially in refernce to Yeshua because there is a wiki article on Yeshua that is appropriate to be referenced wherever "Jesus" would have been, in a Messianic information article. In other words, I will only agree to seeing the name "Jesus" being used in the article as long as it links to Yeshua - but why bother changing the name? Just keep Yeshua and keep the reference alive - for the reference to Yeshua from Messianic Judaism is far more important in my mind, than a reference to Jesus. Theology section needs to be reduced
The Theology section of Messianic Judaism has exploded in content (inigmatus jumps up and shouts YES & amen!!!!) so much so that Messianic Jewish theology has been created siphon new content into it. From there, anything that is related to Messianic Halakha can be summarized and the majority of halakic content can be moved to the Messianic Halakha. Agreed? We also need a consensus to determine what information in the current Theology section needs to be parsed down. About the Naming
Some of my opinions about the naming. Well, first, it's good the article start to approach MJ as what it is: Judaism. And Jews for Jesus as what it is: just baptist Christianity with a kippot! - MJ is not Judaism and it will never be Judaism. That fact however is irrelevant to the issue of having an acceptably complete article covering the subject. As for the portal or the wikiproject, I don't see why they can't exist besides the fact that there aren't that many subjects to cover that aren't already being handled similarly through other venues. Like Jubus, most of the subjects related to MJ would be handled either through a Jewish venue or through a Christian venue. What I mean when I say this is that on most of the related Jewish subjects there's little distinct about MJ and on most of the related Christian subjects there's also nothing distinct about MJ.
- As for the links... I'm not sure if the first is even a real organisation; only 340 hits on Google and it's clearly not a professionally-done website. Either they're not notable or they don't actually exist. The second one is advertising and should not be included. The third... I don't know. WP:V much? Fourth... Same reasons as #1.

- If you would check their directories of affiliated congregations, you would see that they all have at least a handful of affiliated congragations/synagogues. They are definitely organizations, as far as I can tell. The second link probably shouldn't be there, I agree. The third one isn't "typical", but it is definitely Messianic Judaism. MJ isn't Judaism? That's your opinion. You've never given me a good reason why Messianic Judaism isn't Judaism, and I have plenty of hard theological evidence that asserts that it is, so there's that. Really, how does Yeshua of Nazeret, who Messianic Jews consider the ultimate human example of Torah as well as the Jewish Mossiach in his first of two appearances (Mossiah ben Yosef and then Mossiach ben David), change their Mitzvot-observant Judaism? An understanding of Torah leads you to the Mossiach, the ultimate human example of the Torah, and the Mossiah, the ultimate human example of Torah, will naturally lead you back to the Torah he represents. it is cyclical.

- Further to comments above, MJ is neither Judaism nor Christianity. Like Islam, it is a distinct religious tradition that cannot correctly be placed within either group. Hence, its proper categorization is as an Abrahamic faith.

- Since the movement claims independence, and acts independently, it's disingenuous and POV to continue trying to force it into either category. It's as independent as Islam, as Jewish as Islam, and as Christian as Islam. To future editors who want to debate the issue of MJ's Jewishness or Christianness, my advice is: Leave it alone. Or go pick on the Muslims and accuse THEM of being secretly Jewish or secretly Christian. See how far you get with THAT effort!

- Sorry, but Messianic Judaism is profoundly, if not entirely Jewish. Muslims and Christians don't cant the Shema (if they even know what it is). They don't call "Moses" Moshe, pronounce David "dah-veed", who the Biblical person Mordechai is ("Mark"), call the Jewish Moshiah by his actual name (Yeshua) or refer to any books as the Torah, Tanakh, Mishneh, and B'rit Chadasha. etc. a million examples. Muslims and Christians definitely DON'T observe the Torah. Usually, Muslims and Christians are NOT ethnic Jews, and most MJs are. Muslims and Christians don't go to the synagogue and carry the Torah scroll from out of the Ark. Christians and Muslims don't blow the shofar on Rosh Hashannah, pray with the rabbi on the Shabbat, or light the Menorah at Chanukkah time. Muslims and Christians certainly don't wear the tallit, tzitzit, or kipah. Christians and Muslims can't tell you why Tisha B'Av is important, why you shouldn't put the "o" in G-d, what "Baruch HaShem!" means, how the Chabad-Lubavitch calender is beautiful, or what kinds of seafood you should eat according to G-d's Torah. Messianic Jews generally do most or all of these things, and Christians and Muslims do none. I could potentially list a million examples for why Messianic Judaism is extremely Jewish; claiming that it is "its own thing" is incredibly cowardly. When my actual account (ZOrkfan) returns in a week, I will dedicate myself to comprehensive improvement and streamlining of the entire MJ wiki-project. Confused
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but Is Messianic Judaism the same thing as or in any way affiliated with Jews for Jesus? And either way, I just read this article (semi-thoroughly) and found no explanation that could clear this up for someone who doesn't know anything about the subject and might have the two confused. - Jews for Jesus is simply a Christian organization that seeks to evangelize those of Judaism into a faith and practice of traditional evangelical Christianity apart for Judaism iteslf - which usually implies a general forsaking of Torah (like not keeping kosher, or changing Sabbath to Sunday), and celebrating "Christian" holidays of Easter and Christmas. It is for this reason that the link to Jews for Jesus is nicely tucked away at the bottom of the "Christian" section of the Messianic Judaism template. Most Messianics do not associate Jews for Jesus with the Messianic Movement, and many will outright disown them, but historically their role has been derived from the more evangelistic beginnings of the Movement. I should probably make a note somewhere in the Messianic Judaism article to help resolve this very unsupported objection that some Jews may have with the Movement - as we are NOT "Christian" Jews for Jesus. - Messianic Judaism is in no way affiliated, or in any way the same thing as Jews for Jesus. See Rabbi Bruce L. Cohen's article "We are NOT Jews for Jesus!". JfJ seeks to evangelize and assimilate Jews into evangelical Christianity, and are a sham. Most Messianic Jews disagree with most or all of JfJ's prosyletic actions. Thankfully, they have had little success whatsoever in attemting to take Judaism away from unassuming Jews. Also, this article is neither very informative (it is filled with wishful assumptions, half-truths, and even outright non-truths because it was mostly written by people that have very little familiarity with Messianic Judaism) or very NPOV (it was written 90% from the perspective of anti-Messianic Jews, rather than an actual neutral perspective). - Are you refering to the current Messianic Judaism article here on wikipedia as not being NPOV and written mostly by people "who have very little familiarity with Messianic Judaism"? If so, I object, since I was the one who re-drafted the entire article from scratch, and about 75% of the material is still mine. I am a Torah-observant Messianic Jew, a member of Kehilat T'Nuvah http://www.graftedin.com . I had hoped that my presentation was NPOV, although in the beginning it lacked several source citations which many editors have graciously found and added. The prior article before I redrafted this whole thing was 90% slanted from the Jewish anti-missionary perspective, and was constantly locked up by edit wars. Forgive me for jumping on this, but I'm just defending myself and other Messianics who have worked hard to present a fair, honest, and NPOV article with as many references as the public demands. Back to the topic at hand though: I would love more Messianic references to Jews for Jesus as more proof-text of the desired seperation between adherents to Messianic Judaism and those who support Jews for Jesus. I just know personally that I don't mind J4J in their missionary outreach since at least they are actually engaging the anti-missionaries and other Jews about the truth of Messiah, but they shoot themselves in the foot by promoting a brand of Christianity that would be very foreign to Yeshua and the followers of his day. They come across as inconsistent in their theology and wind up getting tripped over the Torah and its application. As believers in Yeshua we shouldn't be totally against the primary mission of J4J - in that they seek to educate Jews about the Messiah; but we should also make it clear to those Jews who look at Messianic Judaism and be very clear that we are NOT J4J, and the reasons we object to most of their positions, as well as educate others taht we are not a Movement promoting a form of anti-Torah, anti-Sabbath, anti-Kosher, traditional evangelical Christianity. I say to my fellow Messianics, don't go the extreme and totally forsake J4J, as even though we may disagree with their ultimate aims, we are after all "on the same team", but rather let Messianics be the ones standing for the truth of God's word, the truth about Yeshua, and the truth that he is not only the Messiah but is a Sabbath-keeping, kosher-eating Messiah who wants us to follow him in those things, and so then let the Truth stand on its own merit to be judged by the hearers. - Messianic Judaism must seriously and totally abstain itself from the Jews for Jesus missionary organization. First, because Jews for Jesus, every day of the week (including the Shabbat, mind you), converts Jews to a different and foreign religion and removes them from their Judaism. Secondly, because Jews for Jesus, in the minds of many, is firmly tied to (if not the face of) Messianic Judaism, which is not only entirely false but is explicitly harmful to the Torah-observant, Mishnehic, and prophecy-originated Messianic identity MJ strives to achieve. Third, by abstaining from all ties with an organization counteractive to your very own goals, you will be sending a clear message that you have a policy of non-acceptance for the missionizing of Jews into other religions, which is clearly prohibited in the Torah. About the articles themselves, they are getting better especially that they are now being centralized with a project and a portal, but there is much revision and streamlining to be done, throughout. You presented to me quite an interesting Messianic Congregation (Charismatic, tho? That is a Christian term). In fact, some of the theology section is even based on your own congregation. However, the Statement of Faith really seemed more geared toward Hebrew Christianity, rather than Messianic Jewish principles of belief along Maimonedian lines such as along the following lines: http://www.omjra.org/Faith.html Also, it was strange that your congregation has "pastors"; Messianic Jews have rabbis (and it isn't necessarily a title of reverence either, no more than Doctor is). Messianic Jews also don't attempt to pronounce the Tetragrammaton, which HaShem allowed only the Levite Kohenim on the day of Yom Kippur to attempt to say once in the Temple, the only time of full prostration; they say Adonai, HaShem, or Eloheim instead.Some Messianic Jewish synagogues and congregations around my area include Beit Yeshua (http://www.beityeshua.org/first.html) and Beth Sar Shalom (http://www.bethsar.com/worship%20services.htm). In defense of my congregation, our leaders are called "pastors" because many of them are not ordained rabbis from a Messianic yeshiva yet. We are "Charismatic" in that we beleive in the laying on of hands for believers to "receive the Spirit" and the outward expressions of that empowerment known as the "gifts of the Spirit". The concept is Hebraic in that the writers of the Tanakh were "carried by the Spirit" when they wrote, or the "Spirit of God came upon" them to do something by supernatural means. In regards to using "Christian" terms, we understand "charismata" is Greek for "gifts," but so too is "synagogue" Greek for "meeting place". So some Greek terms are even accepted in the Jewish community at large. I personally think Messianic Judaism has done a great job in communicating the need to observe Torah, but is lacking in explaining the deep personal and spiritual experiences of believers as found in the Apostolic Writings. We would do much good if after we've built up the fortifications of safety within Torah observance that we also seek to decorate the inside of those foritifications with a good dose of the Spirit of God. inigmatus 19:17, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

- They way you describe it, it seems like your congregation places tremendously too much emphasis on such narrow concepts. No wonder so many people think of Messianic Judaism as Ev. Christianity decorated with a veneer of Judaism; that is how your congregation is displaying it, in a way that is socially hard-coded as fundamentalist Christianity! It's funny, the orthodox Messianic Jews think we're too Christian, and the liberal Messianic Jews think we are too orthodox. I of course consider myself an orthodox Messianic, but though I may see the point of trying to "witness to Jews" by our order of service (which though it may seem a good idea as a whole, our services are just not really geared to - well, being specifically "Jewish" "seeker-friendly" services - or any other people group for that matter - we just worship as we believe we are to worship), I of course disagree with your assessment of my congregation as I am not sure what constitutes "tremendously too much emphasis on such narrow concepts" is about, but it would take too long here to go into a defense of our congregation's seperation from evangelical Christianity here, and the discussion would be perhaps better taken out of Wikipedia and off this talk page. The vast majority of the list you've shared at messianicworship.com can be checked off as being a description of Kehilat T'Nuvah, though more could always be taught. You must also be aware there is no such thing as a perfect body of believers, and trying to get people to do all the things on the list, especially since our membership is mostly made up of first-generation Messianics, can be like trying to herd cats. You are more than welcome to download and listen to our media sources to maybe perhaps change your mind about the matter; or email inigmatus at gmail dot com to continue this discourse from there. I consider issues like this to be internal debates, but they are proof that the Messianic Movement is alive and well and I encourage them all the time. I just don't think Wikipedia is the place to debate over the issues, only merely to inform about the different sides. Messianic Halakha is one of the greatest areas of debate within the Movement, and what upsets me most is the hurt feelings and congregational splits that occur because some of the issues can become divisive if people let them be divisive - when Torah isn't clear either way. I really wish followers would be humble enough to realize that there is no one perfect Messianic congregation - for if there were, Yeshua probably would already be here by now. Once we realize that God places us with a family of believers, and that it is our duty to contribute what God has given us for others, then congregations can grow, mature, and vigorously debate over issues for the good of all, rather than to the detriment of all. Halakha should never be a source of justification for congregation splits. Only the written Torah should be the line of such demarcation; and I will stand by it. - I do think, however, that theologically Conservative/Orthodox Messianic Judaism (along the lines of http://www.utom.org/index8.htm and http://www.omjra.org/ and perhaps evenhttp://www.nazarenekabbalah.net/index.htm) should really be the chief model for Messianic Judaism in general; there is really no other chance for Messianic Judaism to be recognized as legitimately Jewish by its Rabbinic counterparts, and to become totally seperated from the Christianity with which it is often associated. I'm antimissionary; I believe that the idea of sharing your fath should always come in a balanced, converstation-based, and peaceful dialogue, and that people really don't care what you know until they know that you care. Identity
I would request that any major changes in the Identity section be discussed here first before having the changes be made in the article. Especially if the one making such a change isn't even a registered user, I would request that they would discuss it here. I will not revert the changes that have been made so far, but I personally take issue with the more Messianic POV the changes now read. It seems to me to be a rehash of anti-Christian and avoiding-the-issue-of-the-belief-in-the-divinity-of-Yeshua tactic and common phraseology that some Messianics take to avoid being specific in what they believe in the issues that truly seperate them from Christians, and other Jews. Not that I disagree with the content, I just believe now that it's lacking an informative description of Messianic Judaism to the rest of the world. After all, not only do Messianics believe Yeshua to be the Messiah, but so do many other groups. I believe instead there is a description for Messianic Judaism that in one statement can set it apart as not just a religion that believes Yeshua is the Messiah, but that such a description SHOULD include a description which would be familiar to the common reader: namely that Messianics DO believe in the essential salvific doctrines of Christianity, in addition to their Torah obedience. Thoughts? I think sometimes we as Messianics can go too far in seperating from the faith of our brothers and sisters in Messiah, even though they are ignorant of the truth of Torah. - I'm not sure what you mean by "essential salvific doctrines of Christianity". The concept of "salvation" in its original Jewish meaning is actually closer to the concept of healing (just like in Judaism the concept of "sin" is much closer to making a mistake or living with errors, rather than damnation; I wish most MJs knew that) and coming closer to G-d. The Moshiach, though, as he is partly Israel's suffering servant, bears the brunt of their iniquities in their stead. The Moshiach tends to the gateway of G-d's Kingdom. One way or the other, I have and always have had a major problem with the idea that there is something like a one-path, one-chance-or-no-chance concept of being with G-d. Is the Moshiach divine? Well, technically every human being from Adam on has a "divine soul". However, in this existance, it is always subservient to the demands of the body. Only the Moshiach is actually fully subservient to his "divine soul". Not that I'm really a unitarian or universalist, though...

- I just discovered this wonderful article on an equally great website: http://www.geocities.com/~rabbi1/beit.html This is the historically accurate, well-studied brief history of early (1st to 4th century) Messianic Judaism that no Christian, wikipedia article (they are all tremendously biased and refer to the early Messianic Jewish community in a completely Christian understanding), or probably even [|Michael Rood] will be able to tell you. Article is called History (Acts to 400 C.E.). By the fourth century Messianic Judaism was virtually eradicated by Constantinian Paganism (I guess most people prefer to call it Christianity). The Nazarene school was rejected by the Pharasaical leadership since the 132 C.E. Bar Kobkha revolt because they agreed to assist their brothers in arms but rejected Bar Kobkha as the Mashiach (because Kobkha fulfilled virtually none of the prophecies), and were not allowed return. Their only other option was death by the Constantinian Church or assimilation to it. Another sad chapter in Jewish history, really. The website itself is actually a small assortment of advice for practicing Charedi-style ("really orthodox") and Modern Orthodox Messianic Judaism. It seems difficult to believe that, although it is very new and VERY small, such Messianic Judaism DOES exist today in Israel! What Messianic Judaism is NOT
Alright, I am finally back as Zorkfan, which means it is acceptable for me to make major edits and comments once again. Plenty of work to be done, but at least the contours of an article eventually acceptable to be submitted as a feature article/good article are beginning to form. To give the other editors a better idea of what Messianic Judaism IS, I have created a short list of groups that are not Messianic Jews and have virtually no affiliation with the Messianic Jewish movement. I do not mean to offend you if you fall under any of the following, but if you do, you aren't a MJ:
Hebrew Christians: In the face of a growing and maturing Messianic Judaism, the Hebrew Christianity that Modern MJ actually emerged parallel to in the 19th century is virtually dead as a movement today. There's not much explanation due here: a Messianic Jew is usually an ethnic Jew, believes that Y'shua of Nazareit is the first appearance of the Mashiach of Israel, and practices Judaism (it's a two-millenium old tradition over 1/2 as old as Judaism itself going back to the twelve talmudim of Y'shua and the grassroots following of thousands he had in Judea, and the Nazarene sect that lasted for a few centuries after. From about 400 CE to the last century, of course, Messianic Judaism was essentially nonexistant in any form). A Hebrew Christian, on the other hand, is by necessity an ethnic Jew that practices the Christian religion, period at end of sentence. There is not a real crossover or much potential for confusion here. The idea of putting up a Christmas tree, eating pepperonis on your pizza, or pretending like Sunday is the Sabbath is anathema to an observant Messianic Jew.
Jews for Jesus: If Messianic Judaism has an Achilles weakness, this is the one, because there is a true lack of outspokenness in the movement about the simple and essential fact that Messianic Jews and the "Jews for Jesus" missionary group have no connections and are mutually exclusive. Don't be misiformed, please! There is virtually no connection or overlap between Messianic Judaism and the JfJ group, and any similarity is almost certainly superficial, and JfJ certainly is not the face of any sector of MJ, as many actually believe. Rabbinic Jews often approach MJ with the misguided belief that the opposite is true, possibly due to superficiality and the overt name. Jews for Jesus has only a single actual ethnic (though non-Jewish) Jew in its leadership, ordained baptist minister Moishe Rosen. So I guess even JfJ's name can really be seen as false advertising. Virtually every Rabbinic Jewish refutation I have read for Messianic Judaism refers to the evangelical Christian Jews for Jesus missionizing organization and Messianic Judaism in the same sentence or context. Either they don't know the simple facts before setting out to write a respectable paper or they don't care if it's false leverage. Jews for Jesus is, at best, an evangelical Christian group that may use an aesthetic or a veneer of Judaism to fulfill goals, and at worst, an organization almost entirely comprised of non-Jews that actively seeks to assimilate Jews and remove their Judaism wholesale, doing mildly in one way what Hitler did in another. More Messianic Jews need to realize that JfJ not only isn't moving even remotely in the same direction as MJ's goals and beliefs; it may be its most dangerous opponent in the long run.
Anti-Torah Groups: Maimonides' ninth principal of faith: "We believe with complete faith that this Torah will not be exchanged nor will there be another Torah from the Creator, Blessed is His Name." The Torah is the holiest part of the many holy Jewish books. No Torah = no Judaism. What can be defined as Jewish is at least halfway proportional to the actual existant level of Torah-basis and observance. So a "Messianic Jew" that claims it is non-normative and unnecessary for a more intimate relationship with G-d is not only a Hebrew Christian at best, but is in fact in active opposition to core beliefs of the writers of the Tanakh, the B'rit Chadasha, Y'shua and all his talmidim (Rav. Sha'ul included and especially), and the Nazerene sect. Telling a Messianic Jew not to follow the Torah is like telling a Muslim that the Five Pillars are unnessesary for Islam.
Trinitarians: Contrary to the popular belief, most Messianic Jews DO NOT hold the non-Scriptural Christian invention that G-d (who's supposed to be, you know, immeasurable, supremely ineffible, and omnipresent) exists as three unique and equal persons as a belief (the Christian trinity also makes no real sense to me, but that is irrelevant). Worse yet, this ties back into anti-Torah, as it goes against arguably the most basic part of the most holy part of THE Holy Scriptures, the Shema in the Torah. Adonai Eloheynu, Adonai Echad. The L-rd our G-d, the L-rd is ONE. Not somehow three unique, autonomous dudes. Most Messianic Jews instead believe that HaShem is indeed an immeasurable, supremely ineffible, and omnipresent existance in accordance with all Jewish understanding, and that how he reveals Himself to humanity can be described in three general ways: Avvi (Father), Ruach HaKodesh (Spirit), and Son, Scripturally. They're not beholden to some ecumenical, supersessionist, anti-semetic, anti-Messianic Jew Roman edict.
Those that attempt to pronounce the Tetragrammaton as part of their doctrine: Observant Jews (including the Messianic ones) hold G-d in such high esteem that they dare not say His tetragrammatical name in conversation. They prefer just G-d, Adonai, Eloheim, HaShem, or sometimes when writing the abbreviation YHWH, but that which should not be pronounced and can no longer be assuredly pronounced reliably because of loss of the original pronounciation, is NOT pronounced by Messianic Jews. But someone who actively and shamelessly attempts to pronounce the the name of G-d as part of DOCTRINE? The Sacred Name movement is neither Judaism nor Messianic Judaism; in fact it fits under the cult umbrella by most standards.
Anyone that teaches that the Moshiach is somehow equal to G-d: This sort of also fits under the Trinitarian category. Maimonides Principal of Faith 3. "We believe with complete faith that the Creator, Blessed is His Name, is not physical, and is not affected by physical phenomena, and that there is no comparison whatsoever to Him". Nothing, including the Moshiach, is equal or supreme to G-d in any way in Judaism. All things are ultimately OF G-D, and some things are considered holy and pristine BY G-D (such as Eden, the serapheim, the Temple, and of course the Moshiach, who I believe is Y'shua). All else is non-belief (which I respect) or idolitry (which shouldn't be respected, see Noahide.org).
Anyone who claims that the Moshiach did away with a part of the Torah as a teaching: Like all of the above, no Messianic Jew really believes this. Why? Because in Judaism, the Moshiach is the ultimate human example of the Torah in practice and principal, the Torah "made flesh". He can't therefore possibly abolish it, contradicting everything the Scriptures say prior! And the argument of "the purpose of the Torah was just to show us how much we needed Jesus". Crock. How does the Jewish Moshiach therefore be the ultimate champion of a codice of ultimately what NOT to do? The Torah tells the children of Israel to follow it for ALL THE DAYS THEY EVER EXIST, and NOT to assimilate into another system of thought, and NOT to try to be like any of the others. Y'shua HaMoshiach repeatedly stated that overtly with statements such as "until Heaven and Earth pass away, not one jot nor tittle of the Torah will fade" as well as "I come not to remove the Torah of Moshe and the Prophets, but to reinforce them". and the statement often incorrectly stated as "Christ is the end of the law for everyone that believes", actually correctly translated roughly from either Koine or Judeo-Aramaic as "The Messiach is the aim of the Torah for everyone that trusts". Because Messianic Jews view Y'shua of Nazereth as Moshiach through Tanakh prophecy rather than the common Christian concept of "He is G-d the human because he is, and because G-d can do anything he wants even if it flies in the face of everything His Scriptures say prior, the Moshiach will free us from the 'bondage' of G-d's very own instruction!"

- Zorkfan, thanks for voicing your views. Your views on the authority of the Torah I believe are consistent with the rest of Messianic Judaism. I of course believe that the Messiah is YHVH as revealed throughout the Tanakh, and I think this is the majority belief of Messianics. I think the belief that the Messiah can not be YHVH is one error that Rambam regurgitated when he drafted the 13 principles of faith, and I also think that it's a view that rabbinics have promoted all the way since at least the time of Yeshua, for Yeshua was condemned for blasphemy for making himself out to be God, well after he did what he could to prove to the Sanhedrin that he was the Messiah. Forgive me if I've read you wrong, but it seems that your brand of Messianic Judaism seems to be to be an example of those that seem to deny the deity of Yeshua. I believe this opinion is the extreme fringe of those who call themselves "Messianics" and as such, I don't think this kind of POV should be promoted in the general article as a mainstream opinion - since it is not. You are of course welcome to create a sub section in the Theology section (and also in Messianic Jewish theology) to explain more of your viewpoint. - When did I ever say I do not believe that the Moshiach is divine? I DO believe that the Moshiach is divine! The ultimate human realization of G-d, perhaps, but not G-d. Messianic Judaism has had a lot of trouble casting off the last bits of Protestant and trinitarian rediculousness that may cloud its ability to see their beliefs through an intimately scriptural and Jewish perspective (which, if the synagogue is authentic, is that of "US", not "them", see the hashivenu link). As for Maimonides' thirteen principals, whatever Rambam believed, the principals themselves make no reference to either the divinity or non-divinity of the Moshiach, so yes, for Messianic Jews, those principals are and should be vibrant and re-affirming of beliefs they already hold (with reservation to the 12th one modified with an understanding that Yeshua of Nazareth was Moshiach come as Suffering Servant). I actually believe that modern Orthodox Pharasaic Judaism is in fact a strong departure from the days of the Tabernacle/Temple: with the absence of the Levite Priesthood and G-d's dwelling on Earth, I suppose the writers of the Talmud felt that they needed to come up with lots of new, useless rituals (many that aren't even related to a Torah Mitzah, even though Pharasaic commandments are supposed to be fence, or "just to be safe" commandments) to fill that void in Judaism. Being required to put on your shoes in a certain order every day is as scriptural as Catholics holding the rediculous belief that the Pope is infallible. Nonetheless, every Talmudic commandment that DOES relate to a mitzvah in the Torah, one SHOULD do their best to keep it, as it makes one a more observant Jew, because it is a valuable cultural remnant, and the Moshiach also commands it. I believe it is something like: "Do everything the Pharisees instruct you to do (even that they, being hypocrites, do not as they instruct), for they sit upon the seat of Moshe". So it's up to you, I guess, how, if, and when a cheeseburger is OK to eat. The holidays section seems a little rough around the edges and may need some niptuck, if you don't mind. Movement or Religion?
I was the one who redrafted the article, and I was the one who in the new draft started out by saying that Messianic Judaism is a religion. I had meant to use the term "religion" in a neutral sense - where the casual reader would be led to see that it's a religion, and not in a separation sense in that it is distinct from from Judaism or Christianity - as that is a debatable issue. I would think that to describe Messianic Judaism as a "movement" then I would encourage the development of Messianic Judaism (movement), in which we could split information out of Messianic Judaism which relates to the modern movement itself. This is what I love about Wikipedia. If a page is needed, then the response is organic - a page is created, knowledge is increased, and the public served. Messianic Judaism IS a religion if compared to Islam or Hinduism. Compared to Judaism or Christianity, I would say that it's not, and that it is more of a reform movement within Judaism, and a roots movement within Christianity. For now though, I don't think it improper for Karaite Judaism to describe itself as a religion, just as Orthodox Judaism is also a religion, or Reconstructionist Judaism is one as well, that is, in the neutral/public/reader sense of the word "religion". In defense of my original work (yes I admit some portions of the article is original work, but most of it is now referenced externally) The intention was not to separate Messianic Judaism from Judaism or Christianity in my use of the word "religion." If someone would like, we can clarify that it is a movement, but then would it be necessary to change the article's title, and if necessary to change the title, then why not have two articles - one for the historical religion, and one for the modern movement? In short, I think if someone would like to go through the trouble of creating Messianic Judaism (movement) then I would consent to reinforcing the "movement" aspect of the idea, but in Messianic Judaism the faith and its practice IS encyclopedically a religion. inigmatus 07:49, 12 November 2006 (UTC)
- No. Whether or not MJ is a unique religion is debatable, but it's definitely a religious movement. Also, those numerical estimates of number of adherants are no longer accurate. And the movement is based on Jewish history and culture AS WELL as the teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, and the links at the top gave people a mistaken impression that MJ is a fusion of Judaism and Christianity. These were all reasons why I slightly modified the introduction, but PinchasC won't stop reverting it anyway! And then yesterday I was almost finished with a major re-edit of the theology section when Firefox crashed. Confusion regarding numbers in intro
" that claims to have at least 47,000 followers and 280 congregations worldwide as of 2006.[1] [2] " Neither one of those cites (both added by PinchasC , as seen in this diff refers to these numbers. I can't find ANYTHING in the first cite that even talks about numbers of congregations. First citation says aprox. 40 to 50K and aprox. 200 congregations. Second citation only talks about the number of followers and congregations in the former sovite union and is much lower being from one country. The numbers on the intro now seem to be both higher than the reference material and sound more exact than the references are.Sardious 04:16, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

There are two additions I would like to add that I think would be relevent to the article is:
Under the "Scriptural Commentary" sub-topic I would like to add other commentary authors. Between the sentences in the last paragraph starting with, "David H. Stern...." and "Some in evangelical Christianity..." I would like to add, "Other noted New Testament commentary authors include: Joseph Shulam, Tim Hegg, Daniel Thomas Lancaster, and Stuart Sacks."
Under the "Grafted-In Theology" sub-topic I would like to add at the end is, "One major proponent of Grafted-In theology is First Fruits of Zion ministries. History section
I don't know who moved the History section over the Identity section. I don't recall there being a consensus on the move, or even a discussion about it. Currently the History section needs help. Some facts need to be cited, and it's presentation is rather ... clunky. The Identity section was designed to be the first section a reader sees because Identity is often the reason why people pull up Messianic Judaism as an article - they want to know WHO we are. That is why the Identity section is one of our best sections. Currently the History section needs help. It doesn't have the chutzpah to be the first section listed at this point. I'll keep editing it, hoping my changes can add enough info for someone to redraft the whole thing and make it more presentable. I think the subsections "Messianic Judaism and..." are fine for now. Discussion on moving the History section or keeping it where it is is also appreciated here. Thoughts? inigmatus 08:46, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Unity in diversity.
Unless anyone objects, I removed this section entirely from History and from the article altogether. It just didn't seem to fit anywhere, was not referenced, and to be honest, I'm not to sure what its purpose was. If the author or its supporters comment what they think about this, please let me know below. I know I violated my own rule not to do major changes without consulting here first, but I related this decision to the History discussion above in an effort to "clean up" the article. - Messianic Judaism is already too (78kb) long. Messianic Halakha was created to MOVE halakhic information away from the article into a seperate article Messianic Halakha. See the Wikiproject Messianic Judaism task list for more information. Oy Veh! Edit Wars! Let's keep a cool head.
Recently we've had quite the rollercoaster ride. I just want everyone to be aware that Messianic Judaism and related articles have had a history of edit wars, a past history I might add, because up until this last week it's been relatively quiet except for obvious vandalism from users that have been known to be disruptive.
Most of the editors on all sides of the article debates have worked hard to get them to the NPOV place they are at. As an editing team we all have concluded that in light of the passions that can be aroused between editors of all sides, is that what is best is for the article and for everyone is that we ALL propose major changes and insertions in the discussion pages, and wait for a response or consensus FIRST before adding them into the article. Doing so slows down the number of reverts, and actually helps rather than hinders the development of the articles. If you feel an issue is disputed, please let us know in the talk pages rather than arbitrarily change significant work that we have all worked hard to achieve kind of a peaceful "status quo." We all want to assume good faith, but edit wars destroy that trust. Please, I ask personally as a fellow editor, that if you value true NPOV, that you post in talk pages first and wait for a consensus on anything changes you think the opposition might feel would provoke an edit war: this includes what others might think are disruptive as POV changes, article renames, section edits, link name edits, etc. We should all be somewhat versed Wikipolicy, so I shouldn't have to go into detail in how to make editing a constructive enterprise in articles that have a known history of edit wars. I just ask that you remember what you read in those policies, and consider also what I've said here. We really want to work with you to achieve NPOV. Will you work with us? For the sake of the peace, let's focus more on being constructive rather than disruptive. Think about how the opposition would feel what you are putting in an article, and if you think it will cause a problem, please post your proposed change in Talk and wait for a response from the opposition. If your change gets reverted by the established opposition, then folks, come on - that should be our criteria to realize that what we just posted IS a problem, and NEEDS to be discussed. Most of us know pretty much where we all stand on the issues. So therefore, I ask everyone to be PATIENT within the established guidelines, and consider also what I've written here.
