Messier 49 (also known as M 49 and NGC 4472) is an elliptical galaxy / lenticular galaxy about 53 million light-years away in the constellation Virgo. It was discovered by Charles Messier in 1771 and is the brightest member of the Virgo cluster. Only one supernova (SN 1969Q) has been reported in this galaxy, in June 1969. M49 has two probable satellite galaxies (NGC 4465 and NGC 4467).
