  • Mesmerization, the act of inducing hypnosis, sometimes spelled "mesmerise". The word derives from the 18-century practise by the Viennese physician called Franz Anton Mesmer. Liebeault, 'the father of modern hypnotism' described the process without the original assumed magnetism. Freud tried to do with the need for hypnosis by going over to free association. To hypnotise involves silencing the analytical part of consciousness or putting it to sleep to make other parts of consciousness available. We might say that, in a more modern sense -- free from original connotations of Dr Mesmer -- to mesmerize involves less emphasis on putting anything to sleep and more emphasis on the interaction between therapist and patient to induce helpful access to the mind.
