Merox

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Merox in chemistry is short for Mercaptan oxidation. It is a catalytic process used in oil refineries to sweeten kerosene/jet fuel. The mercaptans/thiol compunds are converted to disulfides. These disulfides can remain in the hydrocarbon stream as they are soluble in petroleum products and non corrosive. The merox process is used in stead of a hydrotreater.

The main reaction is 4 RSH + O2 --> 2RSSR + 2H2O.
