Meridian Records

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Meridian Records is an independent British music label based in London, UK. Founded in 1977, they recently celebrated their first 25 years of recording classical music in 'natural sound'.

Meridian Records' somewhat radical approach to recording rails against the multi-track and heavily edited products that now dominate the classical music market. Instead, on the principle that humans only have two ears, Meridian use a single pair of microphones to reproduce the performance as it might be heard in a concert hall. Despite receiving some considerable criticism for this approach back in the 1970s, the method would appear to have stood the test of time.

They have traditionally specialised in recording relatively unknown works and/or artists at the beginning of their career. Accordingly, they have played an important part in creating the early reputations of musicians as diverse as The Sixteen, the tenor Ian Partridge, The Lindsay Quartet, Onyx Brass, and the organist David Sanger, among many others.

Meridian have also played a significant role in educating those who want to get into the classical music recording business, being one of the earliest record labels to pioneer a training and internship scheme at their Greenwich base.
