Mercedes-Benz E-Ponton

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 50+ year old Mercedes Ponton is still popular with collectors and with people who just want to drive a solid, reliable vehicle. Although by today's standards it was underpowered (52 HP in the 4-cylinder gasoline model) and without crumple zones or airbags, it handled remarkably well by virtue of its split rear axle, providing it with four-wheel independent suspension, and 13" wheels, giving it a low center of gravity. It is not uncommon to find one with over 1,000,000 miles and still running fine.

The modern "E-Class" Mercedes models, such as the E500, are considered descendants of the ponton.
