[edit] [wohngdongwaa pengyam

Please address the doubts raised at Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Gwohngdongwaa pengyam. In particular, the article doesn't explain the history and origins of this romanization. The same objections seem to be applicable to Penkyamp. Can you update the articles with the information about the history of these systems? In particular, can you add some reputable external links or books, is it is in, e.g., Jyutping article? Thank you, Mikkalai 01:12, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I'm not the original author of either articles. I probably copyedited them re: spelling etc, but I have no idea where the original author got the content. For all I know, they are personal inventions. Although, I must say, for a long time, I just assumed (without checking other sources or even Google) that they are authentic and even helped propagating them by adding them to the template. How foolish I am! I have commented on both VfD pages. --Menchi 02:03, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
You didn't comment on Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/Penkyamp. Mikkalai 02:09, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Ok, done. I've dropped a note on those who commented on Gwohngdongwaa pengyam, alerting them of the presence of the Penkyamp page. --Menchi 02:25, 31 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep: Fellow Wikipedians, please pause and think for a second: do you know the exact origin and meaning of "penkyamp" in the Cantonese language? Proper nouns(let's have no doubt that "Penkyamp" is indeed a proper name for the orthography), have varying degrees of SPECIFICITY. The fact that the name "penkyamp" does not automatically lead us to the origin of such system doesn't mean that such system wasn't in use under different names. Let's see: "penkyamp" as a GENERAL NOUN is inspired by Mandarin "pinyin", which is itself both a proper name for a system and a general noun designating "phonetic script". As a result, "penkyamp" as a general noun has been in use among the Cantonese referring to any phonetic script since at least the birth of the Mandarin Pinyin. And "Penkyamp" as a proper noun for a specific system might not be in place well after this system was in use for many years, only until it was introduced to us as such. What if on-line records before 2003 has been mostly erased?

Besides, the article started under the entry Cantonese Romanization instead of Penkyamp. Maybe back then "Penkyamp" wasn't finalized as its only proper name. It could be "Lomazi" or "Zeuyamp". At least it's nothing as specific as "Jyutpin" (a name that is hightly stylized and specified as a "PINyin"--note: not a Cantonese pronunciation--- of the "Jyut"(Guangdong)-- nothing can get as specific as this, which will garantee to trace back to its origin as an officially sponsored scheme). But "penkyamp" is not as specific as this. It means "phonetic script", is spelled as is pronounced in Cantonese, and is in circulation among the Cantonese thanks to the already existing Mandarin "Pinyin". I urge you to think twice about our obsession with the specificity of the proper name of the entry: what you call "Penkyamp" is actually of secondary relevance. The question is, what kind of usage, or systems were in existence before this name was finalized, on Wikipedia?

[edit] A request

I assume you know Chinese. If this is the case, I would like for the articles Tao Ren and Tao Jun (on fictional characters in a comic book) to have the "proper" Hanyu Pinyin romanizations for their names. WhisperToMe 01:41, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Done. These names are fake romanizations. They look like Wade-Giles, but then, in WG, "Tao Ren" = "Tao Lien" (PY: Dao Lian). And "Tao Jun" = "Tao Jen" (PY: Dao Ren). --Menchi 06:05, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Thank you, Menchi :) - I believe the given names are both characters are Japanized or are romanized in a strange manner (I believe the Japanese made the official spellings) WhisperToMe 03:13, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
I have another request: Lee Bailong. WhisperToMe 03:16, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Done. --Menchi 05:41, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Again, thank you :) I have one more request - Bason, found in the "Shaman King" article. He doesn't have his own article but his Chinese characters are there. :) WhisperToMe 02:55, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
It's Ma3 Sun1. --Menchi 03:08, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)
That's an interesting romanization. :o Thank you :) WhisperToMe 04:10, 8 Jan 2005 (UTC)

I came across User:ClockworkTroll/Name the Admin Candidate just now and was truly impressed by your willingness to compromise for the community's sake. Not everybody would be willing to take a step back during such personal debates, as I've witnessed before at the RfA. I don't really know you, but I hafta say that what you did there was very admirable. That act alone showed your sincerity and coolheadness, hence your adequacy as an admin. So, here's a belated symbolic vote of support. WP has way too much stubborness and closed ears. I'm glad to see a sign of WP's friendly and cooperative spirit again. Anyway, "ClockworkSoul" sounds way cooler! --Menchi 02:21, 7 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] re: Zenichi Shimbashi

Good evening. Back in October 2003, you added Zenichi Shimbashi to the list of notable Japanese Canadians. Since then, an anonymous user created an article for Zenichi Shimbashi. This anonymous user has a history of vandalism. I am, unfortunately, having to go back and challenge every non-reverted edit from that IP. Can you please go to the VfD discussion on this article and comment about the verifiability of the information in the Zenichi Shimbashi article? Thanks. Rossami (talk) 23:43, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I got it from the Canadian Encyclopedia Online. But if he's not as famous as the Canadian Encyclopedia claims, then maybe he shouldn't have an entry. --Menchi 02:41, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mt. Fuji

Good idea about reducing the Mt. Fuji etymology. Actually though, if you look at the archives, you'll see that original all that information was in Mt. Fuji but not Taketori Monogatari. Taketori was a bit of a stub. I moved all that information over to Taketori, but never got around to summarizing the information on Mt. Fuji. Thanks for doing that, since it made me finally clean it up a little. --Carl 01:12, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Ah..that makes sense. Yeah, it'd be a bit disappointing for the reader to read Taketori Monogatari, only to find the content to be the duplicate of the one on Mt. Fuji. Or vice versa. --Menchi 02:00, 15 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Taiwan Notice Board

Hello,

Just for your information, I am comming to advertise the Wikipedia:Taiwan-related topics notice board that I have recently created in the hope that contributers with a focus on Taiwan related topics can have a place to discuss on different proposals, in case if you still has an appetite for Taiwanese articles. I wonder if you would care to sign in as one of the contributer? Please also take a look at the question about the title of Chen Yi in the talk page of the notice board. The debate is on whether his position is Chief Exacutive or Governor-General? :-DMababa 06:01, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I'm honoured by the invitation, and I've watchlisted that page. However, I'm not really in the "intensive contributing phase" anymore, so I'd hate to list myself only to never do any at all. I'll comment if possible. --Menchi 08:27, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mandarin Promotion Council

Hullo! Do you know any good books or websites (or anything else) where I could read up on the Preparatory Commission for the Unification of the National Language (國語統一籌備會), especially on its decision to promote Mandarin as the guoyu?

A friend of mine claims that Mandarin was chosen based on its relative "simplicity" (whatever that means), whereas I opined that it was due to its being used as the guanhua for much of Qing times, its standardization and widespread teaching through the zhengyin shuyuan and its finally being declared the national language in the early 20th century. Do you know anything that can shed some light on this?

Thanks! --Xiaopo 08:10, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

I did that article so long ago...so I don't remember any specific websites I got the info from.
Re: simplicity. I agree with you. It's just what the Qing had been using in its capital, Beijing. It's also interesting to note that Mandarin not really the native language of the ROC leaders. Dr Sun Yat-sen was from the Cantonese-speaking region, and Chiang spoke the Ningpo dialect at home. So it's isn't like they picked Mandarin because it's their native dialect either. --Menchi 08:27, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Proofreading request

Hi Menchi,

I have a small request that perhaps you can help with. At the Vietnamese Wikipedia, there is an article about a historic document that was originally written in Han characters. Since we only have the quốc ngữ transcription of the text, we had to reverse-transcribe the text into Traditional Chinese word by word. Since none of us can read the Chinese characters, it's prone to mistakes. Would you read over the article vi:Chiếu dời đô (the Chinese part) and let me know if it makes any sense? The document is about a king asking his subjects whether to move the capital. Thanks. DHN 04:39, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

For reference, here's a supposedly "correct" version of the text: [1] (comparing them is really a pain if you can't read Chinese :-)) DHN 04:47, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Thanks a lot for your help! It's been changed. :-) DHN 17:43, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)

[edit] copyright of images on the commons.

Hey, I just posted a message for you (in French, since your page said that was your first language) concerning the copyright of an image you'd uploaded. You should tag your images , and be advised that one cannot restrict the use of an image to wikipedia projects and place that image on the commons. You can restrict the image to wikimedia use and put it on wikimedia projects individually, but such a license is non-free and thus unacceptable on the commons. I hope this clears matters up. Please see my message on your commons talk page -- it's more detailed and I have some links for you. --Zantastik 00:24, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

One last thing -- it appears that you've been adding much of value to wikipedia and to the commons and I really want to thank you for all your effort! Users like you are a treasure. --Zantastik 00:26, 17 May 2005 (UTC)

Your message is very kind, but, mmmm.... are you sure I'm the person you're thinking of? First of all, nowhere have I ever claimed to speak French as a first language. Secondly, my Commons Talk page has no new messages. --Menchi 03:55, 18 May 2005 (UTC)

Hi Menchi. On this page [2] you gave something that could be useful rules for pinyin. I'm currently discussing the topic because I renamed Feng-Kan to Fenggan (buddhist name). [edit] A Deleted Bio

I wrot an article on my cousin Christopher Allen Weller. All information was correct. He is a writer and has been published. He has also been quoted several times. I am writing you this because a 15 year old administrator deleted the bio I created for him. This is very important to me. I created this bio because he is very ill and is fighting cancer. The administrator sited he deleted it due to vanity. He did not write this I did. It was deleted Nov 28. can you please help.

Just FYI I also received the above, unsigned e-mail. I can't seem to find any trace of this deleted article and the contributor's only other Wikipedia work was to upload a couple of images of Weller back in September. Sounds NN to me if you happen to find this article, please let me know and I'll take a look at it. Sounds like it might have been speedied, though depending on the content it might be more appropriate for AFD. Cheers. 23skidoo 20:48, 29 November 2005 (UTC)
Got an email on this too, have replied on user's talk page. Was speedied, after a short time on AFD. See Christopher Allen Weller and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Christopher Allen Weller. Looks pretty deleteable to me, dunno if it was a clear-cut speedy. Have suggested that the creator cite some evidence of notability and bring it to WP:DRV if he feels that would do any good. [edit] Image copyright problem with Image:Magnolia.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Magnolia.jpg. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}.

Since it's my hometown, I was wondering if you could translate a little of the article into another language. (Don't worry, I'm not trying to pull a Kurów. :^) ) – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 20:41, 30 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] changed one of your entries

Hi, I removed a dubious section for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Li_Chengqian%2C_Crown_Prince_of_Tang_China with reasons provided in the discussion page. I am not a history buff; merely saw some inconsistencies. Please check into it when you have the time. Thanks.
