Dr. Melvin Maskin (born November 9, 1944) is a retired high school teacher in New York City. Although he taught for several years at Stuyvesant High School, he is best known for teaching at the Bronx High School of Science. Altogether, he taught in these two magnet schools for over 30 years. At one point very early in his career he had two of the Beastie Boys as students.
Rarely is a teacher known outside the school in which they teach, but Dr. Maskin developed a reputation that extended even to other high schools of offering one of the most difficult sections of social studies available in the city. In particular, the Global Research Program which he founded and taught for many years was known as both rigorous and rewarding.
In parallel with the Global Research Program he taught Economics and US History. In the closing years of his career at Bronx High School of Science he taught AP History. Also, in his last year of teaching, he served as the school's union chapter chairman.
Dr. Maskin has two grown children and still lives in the Bronx. He retired from teaching in 2005.
