From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre is located in Southbank, Victoria to the south of the Central Business District. The Centre was built as a replacement for the Royal Exhibition Building and it consists of the Convention Centre and the Exhibition Centre, both were opened at different times.
The Convention Centre was opened in May 1990 and has hosted thousands of conventions and meetings.
The Exhibition Centre was opened in February 1996 and has also hosted thousands of large exhibitions. Some of these exhibitions are annual events. It has a pillarless floor space of 30,000 square metres, making it the largest pillarless floor space in the southern hemisphere. This building is also known as "Jeff's Shed" after the former premier of Victoria Jeff Kennett, or "Bracks' Shack" after the current premier of Victoria.
The building was designed by Denton Corker Marshall, an architectural firm responsible for many of Melbourne's larger buildings through the early 1990's, and features their characteristic "blade" entrance.
