Melastoma is a genus in the family Melastomatacease. It has about 50 species distributed around South-east Asia, India and Australia. It undergoing taxonomic revision. Many species have been planted around the world for the aesthetic value of their bright purple flowers. This has led to the unavoidable consequence of these plants turning into weeds. They're considered so in Hawaii and parts of mainland USA.
