[edit] History
Melaka Manipal Medical College (MMMC) started its first admission of students in September 1997. Its founding chairman was Datuk K. Pathmanaban, who is former Deputy Health Minister of Malaysia and was instrumental in the setting up of the college.
The creation of the medical college was an outcome between an agreement between the governments of Malaysia and India. Malaysia has a long history of having many of its doctors being trained in India. Manipal Academy of Higher Education or MAHE has trained more than 2000 Malaysian doctors in its 53 year history making it the single largest private sector contribution to professional medical manpower.
An Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between JVMC Corporation Sdn Bhd and MAHE for the creation of the college. JVMC Corporation will provide the facilities, infrastructure and management needed for the running of the college while MAHE will provide administrative, syllabus and teaching support for the programme in both Manipal and Melaka. The MoU was signed in the presence of His Excellency Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammed, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Honorable Shri P.V. Narasimha Rao, the then Prime Minister of India.
In Oct 2003, one of the medical gradutes was awarded 'the Malaysia Books of Records' as the eldest medical gradute in Malaysia. He completed his medical training at age of 63years old and had finished 1 year internship.
