Mehra is a famous Khatri last name which originated in the Punjab.

The word "Mehra" is derived from the Sanskrit Mitra or Mihir, meaning the sun. People with the last name, Mehra lived in large numbers in Sirhind Bassi which stands to this day in ruins in the Punjab. From there, they migrated en masse to the city of Amritsar.

Mehrotra (Mehra-gotra), is a variation of Mehra. It has now become a widespread last name.
