Megumi Ogata
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Megumi Ogata (緒方 恵美 Ogata Megumi, born June 6, 1965, making her a Gemini. Her first name (Megumi) is sometimes mistranslated as Emi) is a well known seiyū and J-pop singer. Ogata was born in Tokyo. Her height is 168cm and her blood type is B.
When Megumi Ogata was in primary school, she loved acting but stopped in junior high school with interests of sports such as basketball. In high school, she acted as a boy in a school play. She was not interested in university, but her father wanted her to study. She stopped studying at university after only 1 year.
After disagreements and arguments with her father, she moved away from her family and began a new life following her seiyū path.
Before she had been a voice actor, she was an actress of 'Neverland Musical Community', but it was closed down when Ogata was 24. Soon after, she started working in a seiyū/voice acting company named 'Aoni Production', which became the height of her seiyū career. Her debut came from the character of Yu Yu Hakusho, Kurama.
In 2000, she also started working as an indie musician, using "em;ou" as her alias in order to distinguish from Megumi Ogata the seiyū.
She is married and has a son.

[edit] Trivia
- Ogata has a deep voice that stands out from the higher voices of many female seiyū. Although Ms. Ogata has played some feminine characters, such as Esmeraude in Magic Knight Rayearth, she is best known for playing young men and boys (i.e. Shinji Ikari of Evangelion) and tomboyish women (most famously Haruka Tenoh (Amara Tenoh in the English anime), a.k.a. Sailor Uranus of Sailor Moon).
- It is also because of her deep voice, she is sometimes referred as "Aniki" (Big brother in Japanese, usually used in gangs) by fans.
- In Samurai Deeper Kyo, she provided the voice for Sanada Yukimura, who is a 35 years old male in the story. This is a unique case of a female voice actress provide the voice for a male adult character. However, a close contender will be Paku Romi (tipped by many to be Megumi's successor) voicing Uesugi Kenshin in the game Sengoku Basara. Coincidently, both characters are from the Sengoku period of Japan's history.
- Here are some interesting cases of other actors she had worked with and interesting relation of the characters they worked for:
- She worked with Kotono Mitsuishi together in Sailor Moon, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Detective Academy Q (but had no interaction between characters), while Misato Katsuragi (Mitsushi) is the guardian of Shinji Ikari (Ogata) in Eva but Haruka Tenoh (Ogata) is a keen protector of Usagi Tsukino (Mitsuishi) (especially from Sailor Starlight/Three Light)
- She worked with Akira Ishida and Tomokazu Seki together in Neon Genesis Evangelion and Samurai Deeper Kyo: Kaworu Nagisa (Ishida) is Shinji's friend/enemy, while Touji Suzuhara (Seki) is a close friend of Shinji. But in Kyo, Sasuke Sarutobi (Ishida) is under the order of (or protected by) Yukimura Sanada (Ogata), while Shinrei (Seki) is Yukimura's friend/enemy.
- She worked with Tomokazu Seki together in Cardcaptor Sakura and the relationship between their characters gets more closer (from friends [EVA] to possible homosexual relationship [Sakura]). However, in Getbackers, their characters are on opposing sides (Tomokazu voices Miroku Natsuhiko while Megumi voices Clayman). In the drama CD version of Rurouni Kenshin, they voiced enemies-turned-good friends (Megumi as Himura Kenshin and Tomokazu as Sagara Sanosuke).
- She was a good friend of the late Shiho Niiyama, and they worked together in Sailor Moon's final season.
- Her most respected teacher was the late Kaneto Shiozawa.
- She shares several links with seiyū Hoshi Soichiro.
- Both have voiced the main character in hit mecha anime series. (Soichiro in GS/GSD, Megumi in Evangelion) Also, their female guardians were voiced by Mitsuishi Kotono. The two would work together in the game Super Robot Wars Alpha 3, where Kira (Soichiro) is told off by Shinji (Megumi) for his comments.
- Both have voiced Sanada Yukimura, a famous general from the Sengoku period. (Soichiro in the Sengoku Basara series, Megumi in Samurai Deeper Kyo).
- Both have also voiced characters who have strong interactions with characters voiced by fellow seiyū Ishida Akira.
