[edit] Story

Reploids around the Earth have been losing their DNA souls, which are being used to strengthen a growing army of undead Mavericks on the mysterious Laguz Island. With the help of their new friend Iris, X and Zero head out to stop them.

[edit] Characters

  • Mega Man X
  • Zero
  • Sigma
  • Iris
  • Berkana - Berkana was a Reploid Researcher who, under the supervision of Sigma, created a DNA Soul chip that reproduced deceased Mavericks and implanted the Sigma Virus in them. She also stole the souls of some Reploids to enhance her own power, and that of her partner Gareth. When X and Zero came to stop the Soul Erasure incidents, she mistakenly let them continue to battle the eight guardians and they eventually infiltrated the Soul Eraser's lab. This led to her demise at the hands of X, after which Sigma showed himself to X and Zero.
  • Gareth - Although Gareth's early origins were unknown, he worked as Berkana's righthand-man during her time as a Soul-Eraser. He wore armor resembling a medieval knight, and fought like one as well using a dragoon fighting style. Gareth was dedicated to both Berkana and his mission, believing he was only erasing the souls of "evil" Reploids. He was blind to the truth, however, and ultimately died for it. He held a deep hatred for X after noticing Berkana's interest in him, and aimed to destroy him. In a way, this accelerated his defeat. Gareth's sudden obsession over the idea of destroying his rival, X, robbed him of his logic, leading him to disregard Zero's ever-growing potential. By the time Gareth realized his mistake, it was to late. Gareth fell at the hands of Zero.

[edit] Gameplay

The game works similarly to the first Mega Man Xtreme title, except that the player can choose between playing as X and playing as Zero. Both have special skills that help them through the stages, but each also has weaknesses as well.

X uses his X-Buster to shoot enemies from a distance. It can be charged three levels.

Zero uses his Z-Saber for close-range combat. He risks taking damage more often by getting closer to enemies, but his slashes hurt more than X's bullets.

The major change in this game is that X and Zero do not both gain a weapon when a boss is defeated; only the one the player used to destroy the Maverick will get the special weapon. This adds a hint of strategy to the gameplay, as one must consider not only the order in which they will fight each boss, but whether X or Zero's gained weapons will prove more effective later on, and which are needed to reach power-ups.

Also, after each level, the DNA souls gathered in the level will accumulate, which you can use to buy powers from Iris. A strategy many use to pass the game is to pass the game once with X, for example, then re-do the saved file with Zero in order to get all of the boss powerups, or vice versa.
