[edit] Private medical colleges
In the 80's the Government of Sri Lanka passed legislation to allow establishment of private medical colleges. Two private medical colleges were established.
[edit] North Colombo Medical College, Ragama
North Colombo Medical College, opened in 1981, was operating from Ragama General Hospital. [1]
[edit] North Lanka Medical College, Jaffna
North Lanka Medical College, opened in 1985, was operating from Moolai Co-operative Hospital The Moolai Hospital was also the venue for the North Lanka Private Medical College project. The college was an ambitious private venture intended to help students of the north who were excluded from the medical schools of Sri Lankan state universities by a system of standardising of admissions on the bases other than merit. Today, the North Lanka Medical College building lies derelict in the premises of the Moolai hospital. [2]
Both private medical colleges were forced to close after strong opposition from left wing JVP and JVP-linked student bodies from state universities. Many medical students from both these medical colleges left the island. Some were eventually absorbed into University of Kelania and University of Jaffna.
